Since its founding in 1957, the Hellenic American Union has been one of the most prominent institutions on the Athens cultural scene and a forum where the public can encounter new trends in art, science and technology from Europe and the United States.Through a program of exhibitions, performances, concerts, lectures and seminars we promote the exchange of ideas on art, science and society.
The two galleries of the Hellenic American Union, ″John F. Kennedy″ and ″Nikos Hadjikyriakos – Ghikas″, have become a reference point for friends of the visual arts. The galleries have hosted artworks by some of the most significant representatives of contemporary art: Joseph Kosuth, Bruce Davidson, Peter Greenaway, Joel – Peter Witkin, Miguel Rio Branco, Joseph Beuys, Jerry Schatzberg, Terry Atkinson to name a few.
In organizing exhibitions of international caliber that span a wide spectrum of media, themes and artistic currents, we hope to broaden the public’s interest in and encourage its involvement with contemporary art.
The program of exhibitions is accompanied by guided tours and special educational events for students.
In cooperation with Greek Composers´ Union and the Music Department of the Hellenic American University we organize lectures on the history of music as well as concerts of classical, jazz, folk and contemporary music. Prominent musicians, music groups and choirs from Greece and abroad perform every year in our concert hall.
The premiere of the film «Around the World in 80 days» in 1958 with special guests Michael Todd and Elizabeth Taylor was our first ever cultural event. Since then we have established a long, steady and enthusiastic relation with the 7th Art.
Our students and the public have the chance to watch avant -premières of popular movie productions. Thanks to our cooperation with national film organizations and festivals (such as the Greek Film Archives – Tainiothiki tis Ellados, Thessaloniki International Film Festival, and the International Short Film Festival in Drama) we are able to mount film tributes and screenings of rare archival material.
