The "Hellenic Roots" Award Lecture on the city of Emborion, the gateway to Greek culture in Spain, delivered by Eusebi Ayensa Prat...
The event, organized in cooperation with the Hellenic Roots Association, will feature a lecture by Hellenist and translator Euesbi Ayensa Prat, a poetry reading, and the award ceremony.
A few words about Emborion:
In the first half of the sixth century BC., merchants from ancient Phocaea, coming from Marseilles, founded the Greek colony Emborion, on a small island northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Their purpose - as the name suggests - was to find new ways to conduct commerce on the western edge of the Mediterranean. Eusebi Ayensa Prat will focus his lecture on the Greek presence at Emborion and will highlight its importance as a gateway to Greek culture in the Iberian Peninsula.
Translator Nina Anghelidis will recite a poem by Nobel laureate George Seferis, while Mr. Ayensa and actors Annita Dekavalla and Takis Vouteris will read texts and poems by Catalan writers and poets (in both the original Catalan and the Greek translation in which Emborion figures. Finally, the Hellenic Roots Association will award Mr. Ayensa a medal to commemorate his service to Greece.
Eusebi Ayensa Prat is a Hellenist and translator. He studied Classical Literature at the University of Barcelona, specializing in ancient Greek, and earned his doctorate in Romanesque Literature at the same University. He has contributed articles to various publications, including the collection of studies published in 2005 by the Supreme Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) in Madrid in commemoration of the 550 years from the Fall of Constantinople. He has translated an anthology of Greek demotic songs entitled "Greek Ballads". In 2006 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Letters of Barcelona, and received in the same year the “Delenda” prize from the International Union of Genealogy and Heraldry for his work on medieval and modern Greece.
