The Greek Community of Trieste, 300 Years of Development

Jan 20, 2015

Event dedicated to the Greeks in Trieste, organized in cooperation with the Hellenic American College and the Association “Hellenic Roots”…

Trieste

Trieste’s geographical position, as a main harbor servicing Central Europe, allowed the city to develop commercially, economically and culturally from the Roman years until today. Its establishment as a free port in the beginning of the 17th century by Charles VI of the Habsburgs motivated many Greeks, from the mainland and the islands, to migrate there. The Greeks of Trieste, mainly entrepreneurs, successfully ventured into the fields of commerce, seafaring, insurances and the banking sector, always being on good terms with the other population groups. Until nowadays, the community, though reduced in size, continues its dynamic activities, thus confirming its identity.
Speaking about these activities and the development of the Greek community will be:

Dr. Olga Katsiardis-Hering, Professor of Modern Greek History in the University of Athens, Pantias Skaramangas, nephew of the baron Ioannis Skaramangas and Dr. Nikitas Simos, member of the “Hellenic Roots” Board of Directors. The event also features screenings of documentaries and a music program by pianist Anna Dimoula and maestro Dimitris Arapis.

The Commercial Attaché of the Italian Embassy in Greece, Dot. Marco Midolo and the Chairman of the Greek-Italian Chamber, John Tsamihas, will address the audience.
