Cinéma Vitalité: Les Blank’s Approach to Documentary Cinema
Talk by award-winning screenwriter and professor Andrew Horton on documentary filmmaker Les Blank...
The Hellenic American Union and Hellenic American College (HAEC) in collaboration with the Hellenic American University (Manchester, NH, USA) present a talk in English on one of the world’s most original documentary filmmakers, Les Blank, by the Professor of Film & Media Studies at the University of Oklahoma, author and an award winning screenwriter, Andrew Horton.
Les Blank (1935-2013) was one of the most influential, but relatively unknown to the general public, American documentary filmmakers. In his films food and music are often the featured elements. Dr. Andrew Horton, who had the privilege to know Les Blank over the past thirty years and publish numerous essays and articles on him, says, “I wish to share his impressive documentaries that covered everything from Cajun and Creole musicians, roasted garlic, New Orleans jazz funerals, gap-toothed women and Lightnin’ Hopkins to mention some of the subjects of his over 40 films that I call not Cinéma vérité, but a Cinéma Vitalité.“ Les Blank received lifetime achievement awards from the American Film Institute and the International Documentary Association.
