Neapolis - Nea Polis (New City)
Initiative for the preservation of the district of Neapolis, the intellectual center of Athens...
Over the agelong history of the city of Athens, the district of Neapolis (Νεάπολις, meaning "new city") has been host to a plethora of social, cultural, intellectual and artistic movements, including several prominent initiatives of the student community. As a result, the district of Neapolis has evolved into an intellectual center of the city in its own right.
For over 200 years, organizations in Neapolis have in a sense followed in the footsteps of the mythical Antaeus. Like him, they have drawn strength from the land they stand on, the ground that is their neighborhood and the people, who have accompanied them over their long journey through time.
It is that "ground" that we aspire to rediscover and restore in a way fitting to its role as an intellectual center of downtown Athens. Because that center —as, is indeed the case for all of downtown Athens—has deteriorated aesthetically and functionally increasingly shunned as a place of residence and as a destination for visitors. Our initiative is environmental and cultural and open to all residents of Neapolis, whether individuals, firms, or associations.
Our first open meeting with members of the community of Neapolis will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at 19:00, at the Hellenic American Union theater (Massalias 22). The meeting will feature a presentation of the initiative and its objectives in the hope of planning further actions to raise awareness and promote a new concept of the modern-day neighborhood in the downtown center of a modern-day city.
The event will be moderated by journalist Nikos Vatopoulos.
