Athens Twice Seen

Jun 14, 2018 - Jul 7, 2018

Exhibition featuring compositions of "twice-seen" Athens images of yesterday and today...

"Athens Twice Seen" exhibition by Richard W. Moore at the Hellenic American Union

The exhibition Athens Twice Seen by American Richard W. Moore showcases “twice-seen” photographs of historic monuments and areas of Athens. Moore digitally merges his own captures with vintage photographs, courtesy of art historian and director of Éditions Kallimages, Haris Yiakoumis. Athenian historic sites, captured twice, with at least one century's distance between them, construct a puzzle that reveals an interaction of past and present, a dialogue or a surprise.  According to the photographer: “Twice-seen photographs” collapse the past and the present into the same frame. The twice-seen images follow a stream of ideas: observation and encounter, memory and amnesia.

Richard W. Moore has a BA from Yale University in Art and Architecture and studied photography with Paul Caponigro and Neil Maurer. Early in the 2000s, with the advent of digital photography, Moore began making “twice-seen” images, with vintage and contemporary photographs and has since completed six projects at historic sites in New England, resulting in books and exhibits at art sites in United States.

The exhibition is organised by the Hellenic American College (HAEC) in cooperation with Hellenic American University (Nashua, NH, USA) and the New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA), with the support of Hellenic American Union.
