Adults ∙ Core Courses
This course introduces students to the A1 level, but it aims at the completion of the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The course includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking components that draw on new trends in educational technology and language teaching.
At this level, students are typically expected to be able to:
- understand the general meaning of (simple) conversations that typically rely on frequently used expressions
- communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar matters
- describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need
- understand the gist and/or relevant details of texts written in plain and clear language
- express themselves in writing in a simple way but clearly
This course provides practice in speaking, listening, writing, reading, grammar and vocabulary:
- Some of the topics covered in the reading, writing, speaking and listening component are: people, daily routines, weather, clothing, occupations, nationalities, sports, transportation, lifestyle, cooking, travel, technology, holidays, customs, history and references to the past, celebrations, abilities and skills, job preferences, careers, entertainment, etc.
- The speaking component consists of pronunciation practice, exchanging personal information, asking for/giving information, describing positive/negative features, making comparisons, expressing likes and dislikes, giving instructions and simple advice, making suggestions, etc.
- The listening component consists of listening to radio/television excerpts delivered in clear and relatively slow speech, radio interviews, everyday interpersonal conversations, voice mail messages, etc.
- The writing component consists of writing paragraphs, letters, short e-mails, recipes, travel suggestions, descriptions of people, etc.
- The reading component consists of adapted and authentic short texts as included in the textbooks used or in the additional teaching material designed by the Academic Team specifically for the needs of the course.
- The grammar component consists of the use of the definite and indefinite article, basic verb tenses, adverbs, indirect questions, comparisons with adjectives, modal verbs, conditionals, countable and uncountable nouns, etc.
- The vocabulary component consists of high-frequency vocabulary associated with the topics under discussion.
