2011-2012 Buildings of Our City: Past and Future – Final Stage
The ten finalists for the 2011-2012 Essay Contest, their relatives and teachers were welcomed at the Hellenic American Union for the final stage of the contest. The finals then were asked to write an essay based on the following prompt and task:

Local authorities announced yesterday that a new school building will be built to replace the existing one, which dates from the early 20th century. Construction is expected to begin next fall. A spokesperson for the Local Council told the press that the new building would have all the facilities and equipment required to serve the needs of today’s students.

The quality of education we receive in school depends on many factors: the quality and number of teachers and the learning resources and textbooks students have. Many would also say the environment in which we learn also plays a part. What do you think a modern school building should provide students in the way of facilities and equipment? Give examples to support your view.
While the ten finalists were writing the final essays, their teachers and relatives participated in an open discussion with members of the Hellenic American Union Center for Examinations and Certifications.
When the final stage was over the candidates and the other guests attended a presentation on the life and work of Ernest Hemingway.
Essay Contest Participation Awards
To show its appreciation for the Essay Contest ongoing success, the Hellenic American Union honoured the Language Schools with the largest student participation in the first four contests organized during the period 2008-2012. The Language Schools receiving the awards were:
- Vatmanidou Pinelopi - Valsamidis Konstantinos, Thessaloniki
- Deniozou Anastasia, Athens
- Karagianni-Hatzi Vasiliki, Korinthos
- Maratou Stamatia, Patras
The event ended with lunch for all participants at the Hellenic American Union.
