Nonstandard Test Accommodations

The Hellenic American Union is committed to ensuring that every applicant is able to demonstrate his or her language and teaching ability under circumstances that are fair and that do not alter the construct being measured. To this end, Hellenic American Union allows exam applicants with disabilities to request special accommodations. The reason for this is to minimize the effect of the disability on test performance and to obtain the most accurate measure possible of the skill being tested. The purpose of making accommodations or modifications to an examination for individuals with disabilities is to minimize the impact of test-taker attributes that are not relevant to the construct that is the primary focus of the assessment. In other words, the intent and goal of accommodation is to minimize the impact of a disability on a candidate’s test performance. Accommodations are used in an attempt to make the test results accurately reflect a candidate’s proficiency in the area the test purports to measure. That is, the Hellenic American Union wishes to measure English teaching language ability rather than sensory, manual, speaking or perceptual ability.

Types of Accommodations or Modifications

  • extended testing time
  • additional rest breaks
  • reader
  • scribe
  • recorder to mark answers
  • headphones
  • alternate test formats, e.g. enlarged print
  • alternate response formats, e.g. computer
  • wheelchair access

Documentation

  • Documentation must be issued by a licensed or certified public-sector professional who is qualified to evaluate the examinee's disability.
  • Either the original certified documentation or a certified copy of the original can be submitted.

Submission of Requests

  • To make a request for Nonstandard Test Accommodation, interested candidates should complete the Nonstandard Test Accommodation Request Form and submit it to the Hellenic American Union Center for Examinations and Certifications with all relevant documentation.
  • All materials should be submitted to the Hellenic American Union Center for Examinations and Certifications. Materials concerning administrative modifications (extended time, reader, scribe) should be submitted at least two weeks in advance of the test date. Materials concerning other modifications (large font), should be submitted at least three weeks in advance of the test date.

Denial/modification of Requests

Requests for accommodation may be denied or modified, or test results may be invalidated if:

  • The documentation is submitted at the time of the examination or after the examination.
  • The documentation is not from a qualified professional.
  • The disability is not clearly described and does not clearly define the extent of the disability (“poor eyesight” or “psychological difficulties” are too vague).
  • The documentation does not describe the examinee’s current functioning.
  • The disability does not affect the examinee’s test performance.
  • There is disagreement between the individual requesting accommodation and Hellenic American Union regarding the type of accommodation requested (e.g. amount of time by which test can be extended or mode of presentation).

Hellenic American Union’s decision concerning any accommodation is based on its desire to obtain the most accurate measure possible of the examinee’s English language ability.

Sample Tests and Other Exam-Prep Material

The Hellenic American Union provides up-to-date exam-preparation material to candidates.

Candidates should note that work on sample tests does not replace extensive work on language; succeeding in sample tests does not guarantee success in the actual test.

Announcement of Results

Candidates first receive a score report and then the ETECT Certificate. Candidates should note that they receive the ETECT certificate only if they have obtained passing scores in all papers; if this is not the case then they just receive a score report.

Rescoring

The scoring of the exams administered by the Hellenic American Union is consistent with the latest principles of evaluation that have been adopted by the examining bodies. Quality control at every stage of the scoring procedure certifies the credibility, as well as the validity of the results.

However, if you still wish to have your exam rescored, you may do so at a fee, within 15 calendar days after the official announcement of results.  First, you will have to submit the appropriate Rescoring Request Form. Then, all rescoring requests are sent to the respective examination bodies. You will receive by post the rescoring result upon completion of the rescoring procedure.

Please note the following:

  • Rescoring Request Forms may be submitted within 15 calendar days after the official announcement of results. After this period, no rescore requests are accepted.
  • Any scores resulting after rescoring are final and irrevocable.
  • In the case that scores after rescoring are higher than the initial ones, rescore fees are refunded and a new candidate score report is issued.
