|Local press report|
Local education authorities announced yesterday that a new project called “Green Team Project” will be piloted for schools in the area during the new academic year. As part of the project each school will form a student ‘green team’ that will be active in protecting the environment in and around the school. Students will be invited to join the team and take part in activities coordinated by their teachers. Local authorities said this is a first step towards the establishment of ‘green’ schools in the area that they hope other communities will soon introduce in their own schools.
There is a growing tendency in many parts of the world to establish ‘green’ schools in which students take part in special projects and activities designed to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the environment. The role of school children in these ‘green’ schools is essential for the success of the ‘green’ school movement. What do you think are some of the advantages for school children in becoming engaged from an early age in activities designed to protect the environment? Give examples to support your view.
While the ten finalists were writing the final round essays, their teachers and relatives took part in an open discussion with members of the Hellenic American Union Center for Examinations and Certifications.
When the final stage writing event was over the candidates and the other guests attended a presentation by Mr. Serafim Hatziskakis, Coordinator of the Green Key eco-label project for Greece and representive of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN). Mr. Hatziskakis’ presentation focused on the various environmental activities that HSPN organizes and on the national and international environmental education programs that are available for schools and the general public.
The event ended with lunch for all participants at the Hellenic American Union.
