The TOEFL® Primary™ tests (Step 1 & Step 2) are low stakes examinations. They help schools, teachers and parents track the progress that students are making in the study of the language.

What are the TOEFL® Primary™ Tests (Step 1 & Step 2)?

The TOEFL® Primary™ tests (Step 1 & Step 2) are general English proficiency assessments that are not based on or limited to any specific curriculum. They are paper-based tests for students aged 8-11, designed to measure the following skills:

  • Listening comprehension
  • Reading comprehension
Why students take the TOEFL® Primary™ Tests (Step 1 & Step 2)?

The TOEFL® Primary™ tests (Step 1 & Step 2) are designed to:

  • asses the general English-language proficiency of young students ages 8-11;
  • provide a snapshot of each student’s ability in reading and listening;
  • support teaching and learning by giving information about students’ abilities in relation to a widely accepted international standard.
