Assessment principles of the ECPE:
  • ECPE section scores are reported in the following five bands: High Pass (HP), Pass (P), Low Pass (LP), Borderline Fail (BF) and Fail (F). Sections scores for the Listening and GVR sections are reported as numerical scores (0-1000) and section scores for the Speaking and Writing sections are reported as letter scores (Ε-Α).
  • Three section bands - HP, P, and LP - are considered passing section levels. Two section bands - BF and F - are considered failing section levels.
  • Candidates with scores in the LP (or higher) in all four sections are awarded an ECPE certificate.
  • Candidates with scores in the LP (or higher) in three sections and whose other section score falls within no less than the BF range are awarded an ECPE certificate.
  • Candidates with scores in the HP in all four sections are awarded a Certificate of Proficiency with Honors.
  • Candidates with scores in the BF range in two or more sections or candidates with scores in the F range in one or more sections are not awarded an ECPE certificate.
  • An ECPE certificate is not awarded to candidates that were absent from one or more sections. Any passing score they may have received for whichever section they were not absent from does not affect the final result.
  • The University of Michigan allows candidates with disabilities to request special examination accommodations or modifications.
