On March 8, 2012, students from our Advanced 2 course visited the Benaki Museum. They had the chance to see the permanent collections, but mainly the photography exhibition and documentary “Smyrna: The destruction of a cosmopolitan city 1900-1922”. The exhibit, consisting of previously unseen visual material from archives in the US and Europe, is the result of four years of research by the director and curator, Maria Iliou, and the historical consultant, Alexander Kitroeff.
Even though the cosmopolitan city of Smyrna was destroyed, through this work our students were able to see how it continues to live on as an idea that evokes cosmopolitanism, joie de vivre and disaster.
