Preparatory Course for the Diploma in Translation
This course systematically prepares you for the examinations for the Diploma in Translation of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. During this course you will be required to demonstrate your professionalism in the translation process, and will be given extensive practice in handling difficulties in texts as well as in dealing with time limitations set in the examination.
You will analyze and translate past papers. Special consideration is given to:
- the expected readership of both the original and the translated text
- locating objective translation difficulties within the text
- techniques for dealing with these translation difficulties
- the method of rendering meanings within meanings in the target language
- the text-specific register
Within your preparation for the examinations, you will analyze and translate texts from a variety of fields. More specifically:
- translation of texts of general content not including specialized vocabulary

- Social Science
This course is open to students who have successfully completed the Two-Year Program in General-Specialized Translation of the Hellenic American Union or Translation Programs of other translation schools of equal stature. This course is also suitable for experienced translators who wish to acquire a Diploma in Translation. In the case you are a professional translator but haven’t graduated from a translation course, you may register after taking a placement test and giving a personal interview.
Examination for the Diploma in Translation
The examination lasts seven hours and is administered in January each year at the London examination center as well as at examination centers in other countries. The Hellenic American Union is an official examination center and makes its Computer Labs available to candidates for the examinations.
Opportunity to continue your studies
The Diploma in Translation of the Chartered Institute of Linguists is a graduate-level certificate and, under certain conditions, allows you to continue you studies at a Master’s level.
