Principles and Practices of General Translation: First Year

The First Year in Translation Studies is a self-contained course. During the course, special consideration is given to the practice of translation. You will work with and analyze authentic texts and your translations will be discussed and corrected in class with the participation of both the other students and the instructor. By the end of the first year, you will have acquired an understanding of the process of translation as an intellectual as well as a professional activity.

The analytical approach of the texts involves:

  • analysis of the source-language text
  • identification of translation difficulties
  • literal translation and paraphrase
  • detection of transfer errors between languages
  • identification and transfer of cultural elements
  • terminology
  • jargon, slang, collocations
Assessment Method

Your final grade is determined from the grades you have received during your participation in the first-year course in:

  • Three written tests
  • Class participation
  • Delivery of a translation assignment at a professional level
Opportunity to further your studies

Upon successful completion of the first year (TR1), you have the opportunity to further your studies by attending the second year (TR2).
