Visit to National Archaeological Museum

The museum, housed in an imposing neoclassical building from the end of the nineteenth century, is located on Patission Street. Our students had the opportunity to observe the five large permanent collections of the museum: The Prehistoric Collection, the Sculptures Collection, the Vase and Minor Objects Collection, the Stathatos Collection, a corpus of minor objects from all periods, the Metallurgy Collection, and, finally, the only Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities Collection in Greece.

This visit broadened the knowledge that our students had of Greek history and civilization and, as a result, classes ended in a most pleasant and constructive way.

Exam Preparation Course A Level

What will I learn?

Through this course you will:

Develop your accuracy and fluency in speaking and writing
Develop your awareness of the writing process
Develop your reading sub-skills
Develop your listening sub-skills
Develop your test taking strategies

What is the level of this course?

This course aims at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Students can:

understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (very basic personal and family information, shopping, employment)
communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters
describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

How long does it last?

This is a 30-hour, non-intensive course that lasts 10 weeks (10 three-hour sessions). Each lesson is broken up into fifty-minute sessions, with a ten-minute break on the hour. Lessons begin at ten past the hour.

What are the components of the course?

The course content includes writing, reading, speaking, and listening. You can find a detailed presentation of the course components in the Course Description handout given to students by Registration and Student Services upon registration.

What coursebooks will I use?

All required coursebooks are described in the Course Description handout given to students by Registration and Student Services upon registration.

We expect that you will:

· Participate actively in all class activities and discussions and to follow your teacher’s instructions.

· Submit assignments before or on the deadline set by your teacher. Exceptions to this policy will be considered on an individual basis.

· Attend every lesson on time. Your course status may be affected if you are absent for more than five (5) hours.

Visit to the National Art Gallery

They visited the Gallery’s permanent collection and admired the works of well known Greek and foreign painters from the 14th-20th century. Our students had the opportunity to observe how Greek art was influenced by artistic movements worldwide.

For many, the highlight of the visit was seeing the paintings of El Greco and the major representatives of the School of Munich: Nikephoros Lytras, Nikolaos Gysis, Georgios Iakovidis, and Konstantinos Volanakis, among others.

At the end of the visit, our students talked in Greek about their impressions of the collection in the Gallery's cafeteria. This visit definitely enriched the knowledge that our students had for Modern Greek Art. So, classes ended in the most pleasant and constructive way.

Theatrical Play

The hilarious comedy has been running for eleven years in a row, currently with a new cast.
Our students had the opportunity to actively participate in the performance, as the members of the audience are the witnesses who help with the murder investigation. The audience’s participation even determines the eventual outcome of the police investigation.
After the performance, the students exchanged their opinions and impressions about the play and agreed to meet again for another night at the theater.

"A touch of Spice" ("Πολίτικη Κουζίνα")

On Wednesday, 2 December 2009, at 18.00, the Modern Greek Language Program organized, for its students, a showing of the Greek film ‘A Touch of Spice’ (‘Πολίτικη Κουζίνα’) by Tassos Boulmetis, at the Auditorium of the Hellenic American Union. The film is a production of Village Roadshow Productions Hellas SA. The director of the film honored us with his presence and answered to students’ questions.

Since the event was combined with special educational activities, the film offered students the opportunity not only to come in contact with an important part of Greek history and culture but also to further practice their Greek.
The showing of the film was made possible by the generosity of Village Films S.A.

Visit to the Museum of Traditional Music Instruments

Students had the opportunity to view the impressive collection of the eminent musicologist Phoebus Anoyanakis, which consists of 1200 instruments from the 18th century onward. The museum, which is located next to the Roman agora, is housed in an old mansion that was built in 1842 by the poet, dramatist, and patriot George Lassanis.

After the museum tour, the students enjoyed coffee and a walk through the quaint, beautiful area of Plaka called Aerides. They all agreed to meet in October for more Modern Greek lessons at the Hellenic American Union.

Visit to the new Acropolis Museum

Everyone was particularly impressed by the museum’s architecture which allows natural lighting in the inside and view of the excavations through the glass floors. With the Acropolis rock as a background, our students got a full view of the Parthenon sculptures as they used tobe on the ancient monument and appreciated the beautiful Caryatids up close.

15 ways to improve your Greek outside the classroom

1. Agree with friends to speak only Greek at specific times, such as after the lesson, on the subway, or on a specific day of the week.
2. When you listen to songs in Greek, pay attention to the lyrics. Moreover, since many CDs include lyrics with the liner notes, you can read them while listening.
3. Read books in Greek. Choose books you have already read in your native language or those that have been made into films which you have seen. This will make it easier for you to understand the plot and the content.
4. Choose a Greek magazine, a blog, or a newspaper that interests you and read it frequently.
5. Read your favorite comic books in Greek. Comic books are easily read and contain many useful idioms.
6. Watch Greek language news programs on TV.
7. Watch Greek language movies.
8. Attend plays or other events (talks, presentations) in Greek.
9. Visit art exhibitions or participate in other art events that are offered in Greek, including cultural events at the Hellenic American Union.
10. Visit Greek websites. Keep in mind that not all websites use “correct” Greek.
11. If the operating language of your mobile is your native language, switch to Greek. As you associate a function of your mobile with a certain word, you will be able to learn basic Greek vocabulary.
12. Take advantage of the Learning Greek Podcasts made available by the Hellenic American Union free of charge.
13. Practice specific communication situations on your own - at home in front of the mirror, for example. Imagine that you are introducing yourself, disagreeing, giving an interview, or asking for information. Find a partner and role-play.
14. Practice your pronunciation by reading out loud. It’s a good idea to be together with a native speaker of Greek who can correct you. Also, you record yourself and notice the way you speak. Set yourself specific goals, such as understanding the difference in pronunciation between “πότε” and “ποτέ”. Write down the words you often mispronounce.
15. Write down new words you learn in a special notebook. Remember to review them on a regular basis.

One-day cruise in the Saronic Gulf

The cruise included a variety of activities. On Hydra, some of the students took their first dive into the sea, while others preferred to take pictures of the sites and enjoy a walk around the island’s picturesque alleys. On Poros, everyone enjoyed a filling meal on board followed by ice-cream at the port. The cruise was completed with a visit to Aegina, where some of the participants visited the Temple of Afaia and the Monastery of Saint Nectarios, while others preferred a walk in the island’s narrow streets, where they where they stocked up on the famous pistachios that are produced locally.

Later, back on board, our students had the chance to watch and take part in Greek folk dances, guided by experienced dancers. Back in Piraeus, full of memories, the group promised to meet again on the next cruise and have an equally great time.

Walking around the oldest area of Athens

As they were strolling down Plaka’s narrow streets, students visited the Ancient Roman Market and saw many beautiful neo-classical buildings. They took pictures of the most beautiful spots and traveled for a while back to the past, when Athens used to live moments of glory. At the end of the field trip, the students went to one of the most traditional cafés of the area, had a cup of Greek coffee and, of course, chatted only in Greek!

Visit to the Theater Museum

The visit came at the end of a creative and productive cycle of Modern Greek courses. Our students had the opportunity to appreciate the Museum exhibits such as rare posters and programs of old theater companies in Greece and abroad, photographs of Greek actors, companies, directors and authors of the 19th and 20th century, sets replicas, and photographs of old theaters in Athens, the provinces and abroad. Students were particularly impressed by the dressing rooms of prominent stage actors.

Visit to National Historical Museum

The museum is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building that originally served as the seat of the Hellenic Parliament. In its halls, visitors can see the historical course of Modern Hellenism until WW II through paintings, heirlooms, private and public documents, traditional costumes, and jewellery.

Our students had the opportunity to see unique exhibits such as the first Constitution of the Hellenes, banners from the 1821 Revolution, weapons and personal objects of military leaders, documents of important political figures, and signed treaties as well as the hall where the assemblies of the first Hellenic Parliament were held. Students were particularly impressed by a hall dedicated to the philhellenes; for the first time, they realized the extent of the philhellene offer to the revolutionary cause as is the case with Lord Byron.

This visit definitely enriched the knowledge that our students had for modern Greek history. So, classes end in the most pleasant and constructive way…

Theatrical play

Our students were not only moved by but also laughed with the character lines and situations. At the same time, they had the opportunity to meet an older, more romantic and, perhaps, more humane version of Greek society and to enhance their language skills out of class. The Hellenic American Union is sensitive to the needs of its international students. In an effort to provide a systematic range of information to its foreign students and to help them integrate more harmoniously into contemporary Greek society and the workplace, the Hellenic American Union has established the Information Center for International Students.

What's available

The ICIS makes use of the Knowledge Park computers in the library and offers access to selected databases and websites with information on a variety of topics. The staff at the Center is particularly sensitive to issues of cultural diversity and aware of the needs of our foreign students as they try to become members of Greek society.

How to use the Center's Resources

You may book an appointment with a staff member at the Center by either phone or e-mail. You will need to briefly describe what kind of information you need. Depending on the nature of your request, you may receive a personal briefing from the staff member, written information, or be referred to specific agencies, services or organizations directly relevant to your request.

Cultural Events for Students

In addition to the Modern Greek Language courses, our students participate in special educational and cultural events in order to come in contact with Greek and Greeks outside of the classroom.

Classes visit a number of places of cultural interest, open-air market (the so-called ‘laiki’), and various areas of the city. Visits have been integrated into the course program, have specific teaching goals, and are scheduled according to students’ level of Greek competency. In addition, we organize social gatherings, attendance of Greek theatrical performances, and Greek film shows.

One-day excursion to Delphi and Arahova

On Saturday, 23 February 2008, the Modern Greek Language Program organized an excursion for its students to Delphi and Arahova. Students of all levels with friends and relatives and their teachers participated in the excursion.

With the assistance of the experienced tour guide, students visited the museum and the universally known archeological site of Delphi. The sunny day complemented the natural beauty of the landscape. After the tour, food and drinks followed in a traditional taverna of Arahova, where our students tasted local dishes, wine and, naturally, the famous formaela cheese. Before departure, our students had plenty of time to walk around Arahova, drink coffee in the traditional kafenia or buy local products. Sweets, hilopites noodles, and formaela were among their favorites. It was an unforgettable excursion!

Candidates of the Examination for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek of the Centre for the Greek Language, Hellenic Ministry of Education, are examined at four levels of Greek language competency (Α', Β', Γ', Δ'). The levels fully correspond to four levels of the Common Reference Levels of the Council of Europe.
If they wish, students of the Modern Greek Language Program of the Hellenic American Union can participate in the examination, as follows:

The Modern Greek Language Program has been offering courses in Modern Greek to foreign students in Athens since 1957. Since then, every year, more than 800 students from approximately 75 countries join the Program. Among other services, the Program also offers methodology courses for teachers.

Modern Greek language courses

At the end of each course, you will receive a final percentage grade, made up of an average written grade and an average oral grade, each calculated as follows:

Average written grade: Two edited versions of level writing 20%, one progress mid-term test 40%, and one achievement test (final test) 40%.
Average oral grade: Attendance and class participation 20%, performance in two in-class oral tasks 40% each

In order to successfully complete a course and be able to advance to the next course in the program, you are expected to have a final grade of 70% or above. The final grade is calculated by adding the average written grade to the average oral grade and dividing by 2. For example, if you receive 65% as average written grade and 75% as average oral grade, the final grade is calculated as follows: 65% + 75% : 2 = 70%.

Conversation courses

At the end of each course, you will receive a final percentage grade, made up of the following average grades:

Attendance 20%
Class participation 30%
Two in-class oral activities, 25% each.

In order to successfully complete a course and be able to advance to the next conversation course in the program, you are expected to have a final grade of 70% or above.

Exam preparation courses

At the end of each course, you will receive a final percentage grade, made up of an average written grade and an average oral grade, each calculated as follows:

Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek

The Hellenic American Union has been formally accredited by the Ministry of Education and the Centre for the Greek Language as an examination center for the Examination for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek.

Examinations for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek

Examinations are held once a year in midMay. Registration takes place from the beginning of February until March.

A candidate is tested at one of four levels of linguistic proficiency and assessed in four skills, namely, listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The candidate must succeed in all four skills. Failing even one skill means failing the whole examination.

Detailed examination results are sent to examination centers in late July and report which skills the candidate has passed or failed.

The Centre for the Greek Language sends the certificates to the Hellenic American Union by the end of September. The Hellenic American Union then sends the certificates to the address indicated on the candidates’ application forms.

Examinations for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek for Professional Purposes

They are held three times a year and are intended for European Union professionals who wish to work in Greece and wish to prove their proficiency in Greek.

For 2010-2011, the examination and registration dates and fees are as follows:

Candidates are tested at level A΄ of linguistic proficiency, which corresponds to the first level of the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek or level A2 as specified in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe.

Payment methods

To secure a place in the class of your choice, you have to pay the tuition fees in full (in cash or by credit card) upon registration.

Refunds

If you inform Registration and Student Services before the third class that you will be unable to continue (irrespective of whether you have attended or not) you are entitled to a refund of 50% of the tuition fee by presenting your receipt, provided you have paid the total amount of tuition fees.
In the case that the course you have registered for is canceled due to insufficient number of students enrolled, you are entitled to a full refund of the tuition fees.
In all other cases, tuition fees are not refunded.

Discounts

Spouses, siblings, and parents/legal guardians and children of those currently enrolled are entitled to a 10% discount for the total duration of their studies in any of the following Programs: English Language Program, Modern Greek Language Program, and Teacher Education Center. There are no other discounts to the quoted tuition fees.

1. Do I get a certificate of attendance when I complete a Greek course at the Hellenic American Union? If so, from where?

Once you complete the course you are attending, you may request a Certificate of Attendance from Registration and Student Services (Massalias 22, ground floor).

2. May I register for a course after the beginning of classes?

For educational reasons, we recommend that you attend a course from its beginning, especially if it is a Beginners course. However, if you wish to register for a course after the beginning of classes, you can do so by following the registration procedures. For further information, contact the Academic Assistants of the Modern Greek Language Program (Didotou 15, 5th floor).

3. May I attend a lesson without having registered for the particular course?

Students who are nor officially enrolled in a course are not allowed to attend lessons.

4. May I transfer to another course (different time and/or day) at the same level?

You may be transferred to another course (different time or/and day) of the same level, provided that registered students do not exceed the maximum number of students allowed per class. 5. If I find that the course I am attending is higher or lower than my level, can I transfer accordingly?

If you think that you are not placed at the appropriate level, you should speak to your instructor before the third lesson. The instructor will consult with the Program’s Academic staff in order to reassess your language level. Your request will be either accepted or rejected by the instructor. The instructor’s decision cannot be appealed.

6. Is the price of coursebooks included in the tuition fees?

The price of coursebooks is not included in the tuition fees.

7. Where can I purchase the coursebooks required for my course?

The Hellenic American Union does not endorse any particular booksellers.

8. How can I learn more about the content of the course that I am interested in attending (aim, duration, components, books, etc)?

All this information is included in the forms Course Description and Student Brochure (.pdf 1,34 MΒ) which you receive upon registration from Registration and Student Services (Massalias 22, ground floor). 9. May I obtain a visa to the European Union when I register for a Modern Greek Language Program course?

When you enroll and pay the tuition fees in full, you may receive – upon request – a Certificate of Registration, from Registration and Student Services (Massalias 22, ground floor). You may use the certificate for whatever purpose you wish. The Hellenic American Union does not guarantee that this specific certificate will support your application for a visa. For further details about the process of obtaining a visa, you may contact your local Greek Consulate.

10. Are students coming from abroad offered help in arranging accommodations?

The Hellenic American Union does not offer accommodation services to students from abroad. For relevant information, you may contact the Hellenic American Union Information Center for International Students (Hellenic American Union Library, Massalias 22, 4th floor).

11. What documents do I need in order to enroll in a Modern Greek Language Program course?

For your enrollment, you are requested to fill in a “Student Registration Card” at Registration and Student Services Desk (Massalias 22, ground floor) and pay the full amount of tuition fees.

12. Does the Hellenic American Union offer private lessons of Modern Greek?

We offer private lessons of Modern Greek to individuals and companies at our premises or elsewhere. For further information, contact the Academic Assistants of the Modern Greek Language Program (Didotou 15, 5th floor).

13. How many students are in a class?

The maximum number of students per Modern Greek Language Program class is 14.

14. Do tuition fees include VAT (Value Added Tax)?

According to the Greek Tax Law, educational services are exempted form VAT.

15. Where exactly is the Hellenic American Union located?

Hellenic American Union is located in downtown Athens, in the Kolonaki area, at Massalias 22. We are just a few minutes' walk from the Panepistimio metro station.

16. How will I find out where my classroom is?

The classroom number appears on your receipt.

17. Can I pay for only the lesson-hours that I attend?

You are expected to pay the tuition fees in full no matter the number of lesson-hours you attend.

18. Apart from tuition fees, do I have to pay a registration fee as well?

No.

19. How can I determine my level?

If you do not know any Greek, you are placed in the Beginners course without having to take a placement test. If you have a basic knowledge or Greek, a placement test to assess your level of competency is required in order to enroll.

20. Is it possible that the course I have registered for will be canceled?

A course may be canceled due to insufficient student enrollment.

Requirements

To enroll in our courses, you must be at least 16.
Unless you have taken our courses within the last year or know no Greek, you will need to take a placement test before you register. This test can be done on site or online.

Procedure

For registration, refer to the Registration and Student Services Desk (Massalias 22, ground floor).
For more information on the content of courses, refer our academic staff (Didotou 15, 5th floor).
If you are former student and you have successfully completed a course, you are entitled to priority registration for the next course, provided it is scheduled to meet on the same days and at the same time. In all other cases, the regulations for new students apply.
