Hellenic American Union is awarded the European Language Label

The European Language Label gives awards to innovative programs which focus on foreign language learning. The Hellenic American Union participated in the category of the competition entitled: “Language Skills and Labour” and received an award for the program “Greek on the Go” iPhone Application.

Greek on the Go was developed by the Hellenic American Union in collaboration with software developer Top Creations. The application is for use in the iPhone’s virtual environment by learners of Modern Greek as a Second or Foreign Language.

The aim of the application is to learn and practice new vocabulary in the context of authentic daily communicative situations. It is designed for use by both teenagers and adults at the beginning A1 and A2 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Visit to the Museum of Greek Folk Art

The museum, founded in 1918 by the poet Georgios Drosinis, is located at 17 Kydathinaion Street, in Plaka.

Our students had the opportunity to admire the museum’s rich collections, which display prominent artifacts that shaped the cultural identity of modern Greeks from the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century.

This visit broadened our students’ knowledge about Greek history and civilization and, as a result, classes ended in a most pleasant and constructive way.

Visit to the National Historical Museum

The museum has been housed in the neo-classical Old Parliament Building since 1960. This building, designed by the French architect F.Boulanger and completed in August 1858, served as the first Greek Parliament.

Its collections include flags and trophies, weapons, sculptures, medals of the 1821 War of Independence, and a large collection of national costumes. This visit broadened the students’ knowledge of Greek history and civilization. The day finished with a coffee at a nearby café.

What is the level of this course?

This course aims at the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Students can:

understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type
introduce themselves and others, ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they are from, where they live, what is their profession, exchange information about family members, other people they know, things they have
interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly, clearly, and is prepared to help.

How long does it last?

Each course lasts one term. The non-intensive terms last 10 weeks (2 three-hour sessions) and the intensive terms last 4 weeks (5 three-hour sessions).

What are the components of the course?

The course content includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking components.

Visit to Benaki Museum

Νear the end of the intensive June period, students from our Beginners course visited the permanent collections of the Benaki Museum, housed in a lovely neoclassical mansion in the heart of Athens. They admired important works of art from all periods of Greek civilization, as well as examples of Islamic Art. What impressed them most were the collections of the Byzantine icons and the genuine traditional costumes from all parts of Greece.
After their visit, they all enjoyed cool refreshments in the Museum’s Roof Garden and shared their impressions in Greek!

Museum of the City of Athens

Since 1973, it has been housed in two of the capital’s oldest and most beautiful buildings in Klafthmonos Square. The Museum presents the modern history of Athens - from the time it became the capital of the newly founded Hellenic State in 1834- through its collections of paintings, engravings, sculptures, pieces of furniture, objects of everyday use and important relics.

The tour also includes many other exhibits of Athenian history, culture and life. Several other collections and a series of typical sitting and living rooms of the Athenian aristocracy complete the different aspects of our city on display at the Museum.

Cultural Center "Melina"

The preserved building is part of the formerly well-known hat factory "Poulopoulou". In 1994, it was remodelled by the Municipality of Athens and transformed into the Melina Cultural Center.

On its premises are two permanent collections, the "Journey to Athens ofthe 20th Century" and the Shadow Puppet Theater Museum "Haridimos", both of which impressed our students during their visit.

Visit to National Archaeological Museum

The museum, housed in an imposing neoclassical building from the end of the nineteenth century, was designed by L. Lange and remodelled by Ernst Ziller. Our students had the opportunity to observe the five large permanent collections of the museum: The Prehistoric Collection, the Sculptures Collection, the Vase and Minor Objects Collection, the Metallurgy Collection and, finally, the only Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities Collection in Greece.

This visit enriched the knowledge that our students have of Greek history and civilization. So, classes ended in a most pleasant and constructive way.

What is the level of this course?

This course aims at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Students can:

understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (very basic personal and family information, shopping, employment)
communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters
describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need

How long does it last?

The course lasts 10 weeks. Each course lasts three hours and takes place once a week.

What are the components of the course?

The course content includes writing, reading, speaking, and listening. You can find a detailed presentation of the course components in the Course Description.

What coursebooks will I use?

During the first session, the instructor will outline the material to be used.

We expect that you will:

Visit to the new Acropolis Museum

The museum was built to accommodate each object found on the sacred rock of the Acropolis and at its base, covering the period from the Mycenaeans to Roman and Early Christian Athens.

For all students, a walk in the halls of the museum among the masterpieces of Archaic and Classical times, as well as in the ancient neighbourhoods of Athens, was a real journey into history.

At the museum café overlooking the magnificent Acropolis, the students discussed their impressions of the visit as well as their summer plans. Together they agreed to meet again at the Hellenic American Union in September.

15 ways to improve your Greek outside the classroom

1. Agree with friends to speak only Greek at specific times, such as after the lesson, on the subway, or on a specific day of the week.
2. When you listen to songs in Greek, pay attention to the lyrics. Moreover, since many CDs include lyrics with the liner notes, you can read them while listening.
3. Read books in Greek. Choose books you have already read in your native language or those that have been made into films which you have seen. This will make it easier for you to understand the plot and the content.
4. Choose a Greek magazine, a blog, or a newspaper that interests you and read it frequently.
5. Read your favorite comic books in Greek. Comic books are easily read and contain many useful idioms.
6. Watch Greek language news programs on TV.
7. Watch Greek language movies.
8. Attend plays or other events (talks, presentations) in Greek.
9. Visit art exhibitions or participate in other art events that are offered in Greek, including cultural events at the Hellenic American Union.
10. Visit Greek websites. Keep in mind that not all websites use “correct” Greek.
11. If the operating language of your mobile is your native language, switch to Greek. As you associate a function of your mobile with a certain word, you will be able to learn basic Greek vocabulary.
12. Take advantage of the Learning Greek Podcasts made available by the Hellenic American Union free of charge.
13. Practice specific communication situations on your own - at home in front of the mirror, for example. Imagine that you are introducing yourself, disagreeing, giving an interview, or asking for information. Find a partner and role-play.
14. Practice your pronunciation by reading out loud. It’s a good idea to be together with a native speaker of Greek who can correct you. Also, you record yourself and notice the way you speak. Set yourself specific goals, such as understanding the difference in pronunciation between “πότε” and “ποτέ”. Write down the words you often mispronounce.
15. Write down new words you learn in a special notebook. Remember to review them on a regular basis.

The Hellenic American Union is sensitive to the needs of its international students. In an effort to provide a systematic range of information to its foreign students and to help them integrate more harmoniously into contemporary Greek society and the workplace, the Hellenic American Union has established the Information Center for International Students.

Opening Hours and Location

The Information Center for International Students (ICIS) can be found at the Hellenic American Union Library. For more information you may contact the Center by phone (2103680900), fax (2103633174) or email (international@hau.gr).

What's available

The ICIS makes use of the Knowledge Park computers in the library and offers access to selected databases and websites with information on a variety of topics. The staff at the Center is particularly sensitive to issues of cultural diversity and aware of the needs of our foreign students as they try to become members of Greek society.

How to use the Center's Resources

You may book an appointment with a staff member at the Center by either phone or e-mail. You will need to briefly describe what kind of information you need. Depending on the nature of your request, you may receive a personal briefing from the staff member, written information, or be referred to specific agencies, services or organizations directly relevant to your request.

Candidates of the Examination for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek of the Centre for the Greek Language are examined at six levels of Greek language competency (Α1, A2, Β1, B2, Γ1, Γ2). The levels fully correspond to thelevels of the Common Reference Levels of the Council of Europe.
If they wish, students of the Modern Greek Language Program of the Hellenic American Union can participate in the examination, as follows:

Exam Preparation Courses

These courses prepare you for the Examination for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek from the Hellenic Ministry of Education and the Centre for the Greek Language. You improve your skills in reading and listening, and in test-taking strategies. They are offered once a week, during the February-May term.

If you combine the exam preparation courses with our conversation courses and Modern Greek language courses, you increase your chances of success in the Examination.

Financial Information

Payment methods

To secure a place in the class of your choice, you have to pay the tuition fees in full (in cash or by credit card) upon registration.

Refunds

If you inform Registration and Student Services before the third class that you will be unable to continue (irrespective of whether you have attended or not) you are entitled to a refund of 50% of the tuition fee by presenting your receipt, provided you have paid the total amount of tuition fees.
In the case that the course you have registered for is canceled due to insufficient number of students enrolled, you are entitled to a full refund of the tuition fees.
In all other cases, tuition fees are not refunded.

Discounts

Spouses, siblings, and parents/legal guardians and children of those currently enrolled are entitled to a 10% discount for the total duration of their studies in any of the following Programs: English Language Program, Modern Greek Language Program, and Teacher Education Center. There are no other discounts to the quoted tuition fees.

Greek Placement Test

General information

Our placement test is offered on site and on line.
You have to take a placement test before your enrollment if you have a basic knowledge of Greek or if you have attended Greek courses at the Hellenic American Union and have interrupted your studies for more than a calendar year.
You do not have to take a placement test if you don’t know any Greek. In this case, you are placed in the 'Basic 1' course.
Test scores (on site or on line) are valid for one calendar year. If you do not enroll in one of our courses within a year after taking the placement test, you are required to retake the test.
In case you have reason to believe that you have been misplaced, you should speak to your instructor by the third class session in order for your level of proficiency to be reassessed.

Onsite placement test

The test is administered at the Hellenic American Union premises (Massalias 22, ground floor) by Registration and Student Services on weekdays throughout the calendar year.
Placement tests are scored immediately.
The test consists of multiple-choice items. Its duration ranges from 60 to 90 minutes.
The test is offered at a fee.

Online placement test

The test "Do you want to check your Greek?" allows you to evaluate your level in Modern Greek. You can use your results either to enroll in one of our courses or just to assess your language competency.
In order to take the placement test, you must have an active e-mail address. The test is scored automatically and test scores are made available via your e-mail.
The test consists of multiple-choice items. The maximum time allotted to complete the test is 90 minutes in total.
The test is offered at no charge.

1. Do I get a certificate of attendance when I complete a Greek course at the Hellenic American Union? If so, from where?

Once you complete the course you are attending, you may request a Certificate of Attendance from Registration and Student Services (Massalias 22, ground floor).

2. May I register for a course after the beginning of classes?

For educational reasons, we recommend that you attend a course from its beginning, especially if it is a Basic course. However, if you wish to register for a course after the beginning of classes, you can do so by following the registration procedures. For further information, contact the Academic Assistants of the Modern Greek Language Program (Massalias 11B, 2nd floor).

Registration

3. May I attend a lesson without having registered for the particular course?

Students who are nor officially enrolled in a course are not allowed to attend lessons.

4. May I transfer to another course (different time and/or day) at the same level?

You may be transferred to another course (different time or/and day) of the same level, provided that registered students do not exceed the maximum number of students allowed per class. In order to transfer, please visit Registration and Student Services (Massalias 22, ground floor) or the Academic Assistants of the Modern Greek Language Program (Massalias 11B, 2nd floor).

5. If I find that the course I am attending is higher or lower than my level, can I transfer accordingly?

If you think that you are not placed at the appropriate level, you should speak to your instructor before the third lesson. The instructor will consult with the Program’s Academic staff in order to reassess your language level. Your request will be either accepted or rejected by the instructor. The instructor’s decision cannot be appealed.

6. Is the price of coursebooks included in the tuition fees?

The price of coursebooks is not included in the tuition fees.

8. How can I learn more about the content of the course that I am interested in attending (aim, duration, components, books, etc)?

All this information is included in the forms Course Description and Student Brochure (.pdf 5,4 MΒ) which you receive upon registration from Registration and Student Services (Massalias 22, ground floor). For further information, you may contact the Academic Assistants of the Modern Greek Language Program (Massalias 11B, 2nd floor).

9. May I obtain a visa to the European Union when I register for a Modern Greek Language Program course?

When you enroll and pay the tuition fees in full, you may receive – upon request – a Certificate of Registration, from Registration and Student Services (Massalias 22, ground floor). You may use the certificate for whatever purpose you wish. The Hellenic American Union does not guarantee that this specific certificate will support your application for a visa. For further details about the process of obtaining a visa, you may contact your local Greek Consulate.

10. Are students coming from abroad offered help in arranging accommodations?

The Hellenic American Union does not offer accommodation services to students from abroad. For relevant information, you may contact the Hellenic American Union Information Center for International Students (Hellenic American Union Library, Massalias 22, 4th floor).

11. What documents do I need in order to enroll in a Modern Greek Language Program course?

For your enrollment, you are requested to fill in a “Student Registration Card” at Registration and Student Services Desk (Massalias 22, ground floor) and pay the full amount of tuition fees.

12. Does the Hellenic American Union offer private lessons of Modern Greek?

We offer private lessons of Modern Greek to individuals and companies at our premises or elsewhere. For further information, contact the Academic Assistants of the Modern Greek Language Program (Massalias 11B, 2nd floor).

13. How many students are in a class?

The maximum number of students per Modern Greek Language Program class is 14.

14. Do tuition fees include VAT (Value Added Tax)?

According to the Greek Tax Law, educational services are exempted form VAT.

15. Where exactly is the Hellenic American Union located?

Hellenic American Union is located in downtown Athens, in the Kolonaki area, at Massalias 22. We are just a few minutes' walk from the Panepistimio metro station.

16. How will I find out where my classroom is?

The classroom number appears on your receipt.

17. Can I pay for only the lesson-hours that I attend?

You are expected to pay the tuition fees in full no matter the number of lesson-hours you attend.

18. Apart from tuition fees, do I have to pay a registration fee as well?

No.

19. How can I determine my level?

If you do not know any Greek, you are placed in the Beginners course without having to take a placement test. If you have a basic knowledge or Greek, a placement test to assess your level of competency is required in order to enroll.

20. Is it possible that the course I have registered for will be canceled?

A course may be canceled due to insufficient student enrollment.

Requirements

To enroll in our courses, you must be at least 16.
Unless you have taken our courses within the last year or know no Greek, you will need to take a placement test before you register. This test can be done on site or online.

Procedure

For registration, refer to the Registration and Student Services Desk (Massalias 22, ground floor).
For more information on the content of courses, refer our academic staff (Massalias 11B, 2nd floor).
If you are former student and you have successfully completed a course, you are entitled to priority registration for the next course, provided it is scheduled to meet on the same days and at the same time. In all other cases, the regulations for new students apply.

Our Modern Greek courses cover all levels of language competency (beginners to advanced learners). From the beginning, you learn to speak, read, write, and understand Greek in a motivating and collaborative atmosphere.

Intensive and non-intensive courses are offered throughout the year, except in August.
