The Hellenic American Union offers a variety of eLearning programs in Languages, Business and Arts. Most courses run on the institution’s eLearning platform Blackboard. Log on Blackboard from here.

The eLearning platform

Our eLearning platform is a virtual learning center where you can find courses on business communication, finance, project management, museology and arts management, teaching English as a foreign language and translation.

These programs help you improve your knowledge or acquire new skills without attending a traditional class, but with the same quality as if you were in one.

For most of our courses, we use the Blackboard eLearning platform, which has built-in communication tools to promote interaction among participants and tutors and provide you with a flexible, motivating, and productive experience.

Hellenic American Union Monthly Newsletter

The Hellenic American Union monthly newsletter brings together news and events from all our programs and activities: announcements of upcoming exhibitions and concerts, film screenings, training opportunities, lectures and talks, new courses and lots more.

English Language Program

If you are an English Language Program alumnus, current student, parent of our current adolescent students, or you simply wish to learn more about our Program, why not sign up for our standard newsletter?

At least twice a year, you will receive the latest news of the Program, such as announcements, information about courses and schedules, recent events for our students plus articles of general interest to English-language learners in Greece. In addition to this newsletter, we will also send out shorter email announcements inviting you to upcoming events such as film shows, speeches, presentations or to announce new courses.

Modern Greek Language Program

If you are a Modern Greek Language Program alumnus or current student, or you simply wish to learn more about our Program, why not sign up for our standard newsletter?

Three times per year, you will receive the latest news of the Program, such as announcements, information about courses and schedules, recent events for our students plus articles of general interest to the non-Greek speaking community in Greece. Information Technology

Join our e-newsletter to receive job announcements from our Alumni Career Office. Our newsletter also features information on new IT courses, curriculum changes, and events such as the Cisco Networking Academy Members Reunion and the Cisco Expo.

Teacher Education Center

Novice and experienced teachers, language-school owners and persons interested in becoming EFL teachers will find our Teacher Education e-newsletter a useful source of information about opportunities for professional development for teachers. The newsletter provides information about methodology courses, workshops on specialized topics such as teaching dyslexic learners and working with young learners, and new textbooks and other EFL material. By subscribing to the newsletter you’ll also receive advance notification of upcoming events of interest to the language teaching community, such as our annual Careers Event.

Translation and Interpretation

The newsletter is written for translation students and alumni. You’ll find information and news about translation resources, such as new dictionaries, useful links and glossaries as well as translation tools which may interest professional translators. You’ll also be informed of upcoming events, such as lectures we organize in the field of translation and interpretation, and find out about new courses we offer in these fields.

Culture

Interested in the arts and culture? Join our mailing list and receive regular email newsletters informing you of our cultural events and art education seminars. You’ll get advance notice of our exhibitions, free avant-première screenings of new films and information about pre-registration for our cultural seminars.

Examinations

Our Examinations e-newsletter provides English-language teachers and language-school owners with information on our exam-related services, teaching material, important announcements, teaching tips, new books, opportunities for professional development and the like. We also use the e-newsletters to inform subscribers of the dates on which examination results will be issued.

Mission

Founded in 1957, the Hellenic American Union is a public-service institution with an international focus and strong community commitment, dedicated to providing opportunities for a diverse range of audiences to encounter and benefit from innovative educational programs and cultural events. These programs are developed independently by the institution or in partnership with European and American educational and cultural organizations and aim to directly address emergent social or economic needs.

Orientation

The institution is a not-for-profit association with historic ties to the United States and program links to Western European, American and Balkan institutions but is wholly autonomous and self-financing. Its non-profit status enables the institution to use income earned in its fee-bearing activities to subsidize a large number of free community-service activities and resources, such as its program of cultural events, its Library, youth outreach programs and teacher training seminars.

The Hellenic American Union is committed to providing equal opportunities for all members of its public and prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, national origin, physical disability, or veteran status in its student admissions, recruitment, employment, evaluation, and advancement policies.
Since its establishment, the Hellenic American Union has encouraged the creation of a multicultural atmosphere in all its activities, welcoming students and visitors from all over the world. It is estimated that to date 2,700,000 persons from approximately 75 countries have enjoyed its services.

Activities

The Hellenic American Union:

provides accessible, market-relevant, results-oriented training programs that lead to broadly recognized certification and draw upon innovative developments in educational technology and methodology. These programs range from basic skills training in foreign languages and computer literacy and vocational training programs to continuing professional education and higher education degree
provides executive and diplomatic training to Governments and Embassies from member states in the European Union, including Greece. Additionally, over the years, Hellenic American Union expert trainers have trained groups from a variety of professions to function effectively and communicate in a range of diplomatic and international relations settings
organizes high-visibility conferences and workshops that bring together policy-makers, technical experts, journalists and other professionals from Greece and abroad to address pressing social, economic and technological issues of current concern
forges partnerships with organizations, institutions and individuals in Europe, Asia and the United States to promote an awareness of innovative cultural and educational developments in these countries and foster an appreciation of cultural diversity and pluralism, and at the same time to promote similar developments in Greek society and culture abroad
develops, publishes and disseminates learning resources that complement classroom training, including educational textbooks, audio and video cassettes and CD-ROM material, or in some instances replace conventional classroom instruction, as is the case in the institution's distance education programs
develops, organizes and presents cultural programs in the visual and performing arts, as well as conferences, lecture series, artist workshops and demonstrations
serves as a responsible institutional citizen in Greek society, both at the local and national level, by making its resources and facilities available to community-groups, offering training programs that draw upon institutional expertise and enhance the professional effectiveness of public - and private - school teachers and by providing life-long learning opportunities for neighborhood residents and in particular young people.

Recent Awards and Distinctions

European Language Label

The European Language Label is a European Union initiative that gives awards to innovative programs which focus on foreign language learning. The Hellenic American Union participated in the category of the competition entitled: “Language Skills and Labour” and received an award for the program “Greek on the Go” iPhone Application. Twenty projects were submitted from Greece, of which four, including the Hellenic American Union’s, were awarded the European Language Label. The award ceremony took place at the city of Kavala on Thursday, March 1st, 2012.

ETS 2011 Best Contribution to Market Research Award

During the 2012 ETS EMEA Regional Conference of the Educational Testing Service, the Hellenic American Union was selected among 75 organizations to be awarded the 2011 Best Contribution to Market Research Award for its contribution to the piloting of the TOEFL^® Junior™ Test. Meeting web standards

Hellenic American Union believes the Internet should be easy-to-use for everyone, including those with disabilities. With this in mind, we have adopted a policy of accessibility and have designed this website to meet current web standards. We are doing this to ensure our sites are compliant and can be displayed by W3C standards compliant browsers.

The site conforms to the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium, levels 1 and 2, which is the de facto standard for web accessibility metrics.

Design Guidelines

The website has been designed with these accessibility guidelines in mind:

We make sure that navigation throughout the site works in a consistent way.
We use a standard web font to make it easy for all to read. In most cases, the size of the font can be adjusted according to the users’ needs, using standard browser and operating system options.
We never use color as the only way to convey information.
Javascript is not necessary for navigation in the website.

Hellenic American Union has developed its own accessibility guidelines, which take into account standards and accessibility best practice from a number of sources.
