      <title>Writing Center Tutor Training Program</title>

      <title>The HAU Writing Center Tutor Training Program</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;img hspace="10" height="116" width="100" vspace="10" alt="" src="http://www.hau.gr/resources/banners/web-crla-itpc-logo.bmp" /&gt;The HAU Writing Center Tutor Training Program gives trainees the knowledge and practical experience to tutor students in written English. The program is certified by the &lt;a class="external" target="_blank" href="http://www.crla.net/"&gt;College Reading and Learning Association&lt;/a&gt; (CRLA), meeting the high standards of the organization&amp;rsquo;s International Tutor Certification Program. Upon successful completion of the course and internship, students receive a certificate that documents their specialized training.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;The Tutor Training Program consists of two phases:&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;a 20-hour course offered in two 10-hour blocks on two consecutive Saturdays.&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;29 hours of pre-planned peer and guided tutoring with the Center&amp;rsquo;s experienced tutors:&#xD;
    &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;li&gt;four (4) hours of tutoring observation&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;li&gt;ten (10) hours of co-tutoring with an experienced tutor&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;li&gt;fifteen (15) hours of supervised online and onsite tutoring&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
&lt;h5&gt;The Training Course&lt;/h5&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;In the first ten hours of the course, participants learn the definition of a writing center and the fundamental principles of tutoring. Participants are also introduced to the concept of writing as a process. They discuss learning styles and practice communication and active listening skills by engaging in activities such as scenario-based role playing, mock consultations, and facilitation questions.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;The second ten hours focus on online tutoring and on the training of participants in the use of software and special e-tools, with emphasis on communication and interaction (synchronous and asynchronous). The course also helps participants learn how to work with non-native English speakers.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;The final focus is on professional development and the ways in which writing center tutoring can advance career possibilities.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;h5&gt;Tutor Training Program Certification&lt;/h5&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;The HAU Writing Center Tutor Training Program is the first of its kind in Europe to be certified by CRLA, with a Level I International Tutor certification. Tutors who achieve this certification can benefit from enhanced job prospects both at educational institutions and in the private sector.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;h5&gt;CRLA&amp;rsquo;s International Tutor Program Certification&lt;/h5&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;History&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;Since March 1989, over 1,000 college and university tutorial programs, mostly in the United States and Canada, have received tutor training certification through CRLA's International Tutor Program Certification (ITPC). There are well over 850 programs which are currently certified through ITPC. The HAU Writing Center Tutor Training Program is the only CRLA certified program in Europe. Other certified programs include those at University of California &amp;ndash; Berkeley, Purdue University, Tulane University, Boston College, and Carnegie-Mellon University, among others.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Purpose &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;The purpose of the certification program is twofold:&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;to provide recognition and positive reinforcement of tutors&amp;rsquo; work from an international organization, CRLA&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;to set a standard of skills and training for tutors around the world&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Endorsements&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;CRLA&amp;rsquo;s ITCP has been recognized and endorsed by:&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

      <description>&lt;p&gt;On 15th March a lecture was given by historian and researcher Margaret Dounia entitled, &amp;ldquo;&lt;em&gt;Greek Transatlantic Migration in the First Half of the Twentieth Century&lt;/em&gt;.&amp;rdquo; &lt;br /&gt;&#xD;
The lecture looked at the Greek diaspora from a sociological-historical perspective by focusing on the personal narratives and experiences of the residents of a small mountain village in the Peloponnese in the early twentieth century. It was given in English and accompanied by a wealth of audio-visual material.&lt;br /&gt;&#xD;

      <title>Mark Twain: his life and works</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;The American Corner continued its educational programs on American writers, with a presentation on Mark Twain for secondary school pupils.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;The presentation touched on the main works of Mark Twain. Passages from &lt;em&gt;Life on the Mississippi &lt;/em&gt;were read and clips from the film,&lt;em&gt;Tom Sawyer&lt;/em&gt;, were shown. At the end, children completed a quiz about Mark Twain and his works.&lt;br /&gt;&#xD;

      <title>Christmas 2009 Event</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;The American Corner of the Hellenic American Union Library organized a two-day recreational event for its younger patrons during the Christmas holidays on 28 and 29 December.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"&gt;Students in the English Language Program&amp;rsquo;s Adolescents classes, along with their parents and friends, enjoyed participating in various electronic sports/games competitions, such as Bowling, Boxing, and Tennis (Wii).&amp;nbsp;They then tested their musical abilities by conducting an electronic rock band (Wii) and demonstrated their spelling ability in English while playing Boggle, a fast-paced educational game.&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"&gt;Parents and children were split up into groups and the best team for each activity received a token prize.&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"&gt;Our students and their parents and friends enjoyed these highly original activities offered by the American Corner, which combined entertainment with linguistic skills and familiarity with American culture.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

&lt;p&gt;It is a way to transmit, download, store, and retrieve audio material. Podcasts are delivered through the internet; in order to download and reproduce podcasts, you need an iPod or any mp3 player.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;h5&gt;What is the procedure?&lt;/h5&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;By following our instructions, you will be able to download the Modern Greek lessons, store them and choose when and where you listen to them.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;To make learning Greek easier, you can also view and download the full transcript of each lesson (in .pdf form); transcripts are enhanced with images to help you understand better what you hear. If you wish, you can also play the audio file.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;Once you have downloaded and stored the lessons, you will be able to listen to them as many times as you wish, pause at any point you want, and pick up again from the same point.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;h5&gt;Who are the podcasts for?&lt;/h5&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;The podcasts are for everyone, regardless of age, whose mother language is not Greek, and who wants to improve in Greek in an original manner, whenever they like.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

&lt;p&gt;All you need is a music player (an iPod or any mp3 player). You also need to install the specific software (available for free).&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

This collection consists of children&amp;rsquo;s books in the English language dealing with various topics such as history and, travel, as well as literature written for children and adolescents.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p style="text-align: left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Easy Reader (EREN)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&#xD;
This collection consists of books which are written in simple English and are geared towards Hellenic American Union students who are enrolled in English-language classes. These books are categorized according to language level (beginners, intermediate, advanced, etc.). These books may be borrowed only by Hellenic American Union students.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;li style="text-align: left"&gt;You should also have your registration receipt withyou. We will issue you the library card in 1-2 business days&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li style="text-align: left"&gt;You should inform the library&amp;rsquo;s staff of any changes in your address or telephone numbers&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li style="text-align: left"&gt;You may not borrow material from the special collections&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li style="text-align: left"&gt;Some of the material from the audiovisual collection may only be borrowed with permission&lt;/li&gt;&#xD;

&lt;p style="text-align: left"&gt;The HAU Library organizes a variety of educational and information literacy programs designed especially to help children and adolescents become familiar with the library and research in general so that they can better find and evaluate the print and electronic material that can be found in any modern library.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p style="text-align: left"&gt;The Hellenic American Union library also organizes other educational events such as storytelling, presentations on themes such as &amp;ldquo;American Hellenism,&amp;rdquo; and seasonal celebrations such as &amp;ldquo;International Earth Day&amp;rdquo;.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

&lt;p&gt;Students, teachers and staff of the Hellenic American Union, as well as members of the general public have access to the Library and its services for purposes of research and use of the Library&amp;rsquo;s material. You will need first to apply at the&amp;nbsp;Circulation Desk.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;Library material is only available for limited use within the Library and cannot be borrowed.&lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;h5&gt;Registering for a Library Card&lt;/h5&gt;&#xD;
&lt;p&gt;A&amp;nbsp;Library Card can only be issued to&amp;nbsp;the Hellenic American Union students, faculty&amp;nbsp;and staff. You will need to complete an application form which is available at the Circulation Desk,&amp;nbsp;show your passport or ID and a receipt from the Hellenic American Union that verifies matriculation. We will issue you the card within one to two working days.&lt;br /&gt;&#xD;

&lt;p&gt;Please inform the Library of any change of address or phone number that was specified in the application form.&lt;br /&gt;&#xD;
