Talk by award-winning screenwriter and professor Andrew Horton on comedian Ernie Kovacs...

Ernie Kovacs

The Hellenic American Union presents a talk in English on the comedy pioneer Ernie Kovacs and early American TV comedy, by award-winning screenwriter and Director of Film and Video Studies at the University of Oklahoma, Andrew Horton.

Ernie Kovacs was one of the most original and imaginative comedians on American television, who entertained audiences throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. Writer, actor, producer, and composer, Kovacs with his irreverent and surprising humor inspired a host of later comedies and comedians such as Monty Python, David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, and Sesame Street. His creative comic genius is part of the history of early TV comedy, and helped to create a new kind of comedy, that exploited the medium of television to the fullest.

In his talk, Andrew Horton will present Kovacs’s work and approach to comedy, as well as his relationship to early TV comedy and how it shaped contemporary TV comedy.

The talk is presented on the occasion of the publication of Andrew Horton’s book “Ernie Kovacs & Early TV Comedy”.
