Leon Levinstein

Leon Levinstein was born in West Virginia in 1910 and died in New York in 1988. Considered one of the most prominent photographers of the New York School, he took most of his photographs during solitary walks in the neighborhoods of New York. He studied with three leading teachers who were also eminent photographers: Alexei Brodovitch, the director of Harper’s Bazaar; Lisette Model, whose name is linked with that of her most famous student, Diane Arbus, and Sid Grossman, a politicized New York photographer. Though he was never interested in building an artistic career and lived in obscurity, Levinstein left behind him an important and rich photographic corpus. His photographic work was only first broadly recognized in the 1990s despite the fact that during his life many magazines, museums and galleries had exhibited many of his photographs.
