Poetic encounters: “Words (can) do it”

A tour of Japanese poetry led by translator Panagiotis Evangelidis at the Hellenic American Union

The writer and filmmaker Panagiotis Evangelidis is well-known for his translations of Japanese prose. Japanese poetry, however, he has translated only on occasion and always as part of a larger project. The translator explains why: “They say that poetry cannot be translated—and this is doubly true when poetry is written in ideograms.”

At the event, Evangelidis will discuss this compound difficulty, which essentially turns the translated Japanese text into a new kind of metaphor. He will illustrate this venture with his translations of Japanese poetry, leading the audience on a tour as it were of its various forms (kanshi, waka, tanka, haiku).  The translator will read the original poems and Panagiotis Ioannidis, the translations.
