Young Learners & Adolescents ∙ Core Courses

This course is an introduction into the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The course includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking components that draw on new trends in educational technology and language teaching.   

At this level, students are typically expected to be able to:

  • understand sentences and more frequently used expressions,
  • communicate in basic and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar matters,
  • talk in basic terms about themselves, their immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need,
  • understand texts written in plain and clear language,
  • express themselves in writing in simple terms.

This course provides practice in reading, listening, writing, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary.

  • The reading component mainly consists of reading short texts, comics, stories, dialogues, articles, etc. 
  • The listening component consists of listening to short conversations/ dialogues and descriptions, pronunciation activities, etc. 
  • The writing component focuses on producing small paragraphs/ texts about themselves, their family, their favorite sport, their daily life, and special events, etc. 
  • The speaking component consists of asking and answering questions and/or participating in simple conversations about themselves and their families, their hobbies, school and everyday life, etc. 
  • The grammar component includes the verbs ‘be’ & ‘have (got)’, questions and short answers, adverbs of frequency, modal verbs (can/must/have to), verb tenses (Present Simple/Continuous, Past Simple, Future Simple, Be going to), etc. 
  • The vocabulary in this course includes high-frequency words commonly associated with school, animals, weather, sports, holidays, special events, food, hobbies, and outdoor activities, etc.

The School Tests for Young Learners of English (STYLE) are designed for young learners aged 7-12 who would like an objective assessment of their competency in English as a second or other language at the elementary level.

STYLE Level 1 is aimed at the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
