Visual Tribute to John Cassavetes as part of the 37th Panorama of European Cinema
The Hellenic American Union presents the group art exhibition "SHADOWS", curated by the renowned painter Jannis Psychopedis, as a tribute to the acclaimed Greek-American filmmaker John Cassavetes.
Four emerging visual artists — Alekos Vergis, Katerina Christopoulou, Vasilis Pafilis, and Virginia Axioti — illuminate, through their works, a world of shadows: the cinematic universe of John Cassavetes. His iconic film "Shadows" (1959) becomes the central point of convergence between painting and cinema. A creative dialogue emerges between the black-and-white cinematic atmosphere of the late 1950s and the vivid, colorful language of contemporary visual art. As curator Jannis Psychopedis notes: Cassavetes, the radical and pioneering filmmaker, with his minimalist, improvisational, human-centered cinematic form, provides through his film the raw material and the inspiration to transform his 'Shadows' into a visual feast of colors, shapes, techniques, and distinctive materials.
As part of the exhibition, and shortly before its closing, John Cassavetes’ film "Shadows" will be screened at the Hellenic American Union Theater on Friday, November 8, at 19:00, with free admission.
