HAU Movie Club: Klute

Screening

Hellenic American Union Theater

The Hellenic American Union’s HAU Movie Club presents Alan J. Pakula’s crime thriller “Klute”, featuring the remarkable duo of Donald Sutherland and Jane Fonda in the leading roles

This is Pakula’s second feature film, shot during a time of social and political unrest in the United States. Klute is also the first installment of his unofficial “paranoia trilogy,” followed by The Parallax View and All the President’s Men. The film takes its title from the name of the detective character portrayed by Donald Sutherland.

Klute received two Academy Award nominations: Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress, with Jane Fonda winning the Oscar for her powerful performance. Due to her outspoken activism against the Vietnam War, Fonda’s reception by the public at the time was notably divided.

In the story, detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) arrives in New York City to investigate the disappearance of a businessman. His only lead is the man’s connection to a high-end call girl, played by Jane Fonda.
