Beyond Dress Codes in Thessaloniki
The thematic exhibition with sketches of traditional Greek costumes by sketch artist Gisis Papageorgiou and creations by Greek and foreign fashion designers travels to Thessaloniki…
Following its great success in Athens, the Hellenic American Union presents the exhibition BEYOND DRESS CODES: Contemporary Designers in Dialogue with Traditional Greek Costume at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki. The exhibition presents colored drawings of traditional Greek costumes and headdresses from all over Greece by sketch artist Gisis Papageorgiou, which constitute the most extensive and most comprehensive existing documentation of traditional Greek dress to date.
As a kind of “visual library”, these costumes provide contemporary fashion designers with inspiration rooted in tradition and the opportunity to show what has influenced them thus far. Along with drawings of traditional costumes, creations by Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano will be on show, as well as by other distinguished Greek fashion designers such as Angelos Bratis, Dimitris Dassios, Deux Hommes, Yiorgos Eleftheriades, Ioannis Guia, Sofia Kokosalaki, Thanos Kyriakides, Mastori*Motwary, MiRo, and Parthenis in an attempt to create a “dialogue” between traditional Greek dress and contemporary fashion. Beyond Dress Codes demonstrates that traditional Greek costume should not be regarded as the antiquated contents of museum showcases, but instead a creation of timeless interest that continues to serve as a source of inspiration. In addition, the exhibition at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art is enriched by the creations of Loukia and the three fashion designers from Thessaloniki: Andria, Simeoni and Konstantinos Tsigaros. Curator of the exhibition is fashion historian Lydia Kamitsis.
The exhibition is part of the parallel events of the 51st Thessaloniki Film Festival and is presented on the occasion of the upcoming publication on Greek Traditional Costumes by the Hellenic American Union.
