Emporion, 100 Years of Excavations
Symposia and cultural events on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of excavations in the ancient Greek colony, Emporion. In cooperation with Instituto Cervantes Athens and the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Catalonia...
Emporion, the ancient Phocian colony on the Mediterranean coastline of Catalonia, was the westernmost Greek settlement of the ancient world and a gateway for Classical culture into the Iberian Peninsula. After centuries of abandonment and depredation, the official excavations, which revealed the great statue of Asclepius, began in 1908. We celebrate the 100th anniversary in Emporion and Athens with panel discussions and cultural events. Experts from both Spain and Greece participate.
