Hellenic American College, in cooperation with Hellenic American University and the Hellenic American Union, is participating in EchoPolis–Days of Sound 2013* and hence hosting at its premises a conference on sound and all its manifestations, from melody and noise to silence, on Thursday, 3 October, starting at 10:30. These days, the significance of sound is being increasingly appreciated as a pulsating portrait of people, as the noisy breath of the city, as the upshot of human communication and action, and as an influence on human psychology and emotions. The conference does not aim to analyze its subject in a sterilized vacuum but rather to encourage creative discourse among scientists, academics, musicians and the public.

The first part of the symposium will feature the results of an Athens city center recording of sounds and their impact on the people living and working there, as well as a comparison with Paris and the sound insulation works at the city’s ring road. The following presentations will focus more on psychology: on how each individual’s character traits and personal values affect their musical choices as well as how noise relates to stress. Other topics of the conference include: the beneficial effects of music therapy, whether it entails playing music or listening to it; the way in which modern-day urban landscapes are reflected in the culture of rap music and slam poetry; the correlation among music, the brain and human emotions by means of biomusic.

Naturally, music itself could not be absent from the conference agenda. Hence, the second part of the day is dedicated to generating melodious, contemporary and avant-garde sounds. This part begins at 20:00 with the concert Sound and Silence, by and around John Cage, featuring works of innovative composer John Cage, to be followed by the performance of pieces composed by music students of Hellenic American College under the general title Soundscapes.

The conference will be held in English. Admission is free.
