Poetic encounters: “Words (can) do it”

Apr 10, 2019

An evening dedicated to Greek demotic songs presented by scholar and poet Pantelis Boukalas...

Poetic encounters"Words (can) do it": Folk song as poetry today at the Hellenic American Union

What is it that still excites us about the lyrics of certain demotic songs, even in the absence of their music and the circumstances that spawned them?

Award-winning scholar of demotic songs, poet, critic and translator Pantelis Boukalas is attempting to provide an answer to the aforementioned question. During the event, he will be presenting and commenting on a selection of demotic songs, whose poetics are still astonishingly relevant and moving to the present day. Their lyrics will be read out by Panayotis Ioannidis.

Pantelis Boukalas has been writing articles for newspapers and magazines since 1979. He has published a number of poetry collections, and in 2010 he was awarded the Greek State Poetry Award for his book Rímata [Verbs] (Agra Publications). In 2017, he was awarded again at the Greek National Literary Awards, in the Essay-Critical Review category, for his book Ótan to ríma gínetai ónoma: I “Agapó” kai to sfrígos tis poiitikís glóssas ton dimotikón [When a verb becomes a name: The woman called “Agapó” (I love) and the vigor of poetic language in demotic songs] (Agra Publications). The latter constitutes the first of a ten-volume series on Greek demotic songs to be published under the general title Piáno grafí na grápso… Dokímia gia to dimotikó tragoúdi [I make to write a piece of writing... Essays on demotic songs].
