We introduce you to the basic functions of project management: Planning, Organizing and Staffing, Directing and Leading, Controlling, Reporting and Risk management. You will also get useful techniques and practical tips on how to manage the people side of projects and lead high performing cross functional teams.

This is highly interactive hands-on project management seminar with 20% theory is blended with 80% present workshop time, as project management can only be taught through practice and on-the-job simulation projects.

How you will learn

We use a variety of lectures, workshops, individual exercises, presentations and role-playing. One of the key features of this course is the time devoted to in- class application workshops where you will apply the techniques to typical project situations and present your approach.  During presentation, the course leader reinforces the learnings and provides additional practical insight and input.

Technically, the group is divided from day 1 to teams of 5 people and each team is working on tools and techniques under the guidance and supervision of the instructor. 

The course starts with identifying key issues and difficult situations in daily project management and ends with lessons learnt, when you can match the tools and the techniques you learned to the initial issues of concern.

You prepare a basic project plan which consists of: project objectives (requirements, SOW), a work breakdown, (WBS), a project organization (OBS), a project schedule, project baseline (budget) and risk management plan.

Optional:  participants have also the option to arrange one extra one-to-one 3 hour coaching session with the instructor at an extra cost.

New project managers and team members as well as those who have practised project management for a while. It is intended for people who want a thorough review of project management basic principles and  tools.

Session #1 - The Project Management Method

Understand what is Project Management as a management method, what is the role of the Project Manager and how Project Management is applied to everyday projects. In this module we also discuss Stakeholders, Stakeholder Management tools and practices.

Session #2 – Initiation & Planning

Understand the basic project planning elements and behaviors. Learn how to manage customer requirements, verify project objectives and start planning task assignments. Develop a Project Charter, a Statement of Work (SOW), a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and a Project Organizational Structure.

Session #3 – Scheduling & Budgeting
Learn how to develop realistic schedules. Understand the difference in phasing and paralleling. Schedule activities using Gantt Charts, define Critical Paths from ADM or PDM network of activities. Learn how to assess scheduling of activities using PERT or CPM and how to schedule slack or float to accommodate project risk.  Develop the project baseline and budget. Learn how to allocate and balance resources.

Session #4 - Controlling & Reporting

Learn techniques to control projects through ownership, team participation, performance measurement and coaching. Learn how to manage change in project deliverables, time and cost.
