Polykatoikia (Apartment Building)

Catalog, published on the occasion of the group exhibition Apartment Building organized by the Hellenic American Union in 2022.

The volume contains articles by the exhibition's curators and guest speakers at the parallel events, as well as photographs of the artworks of the participating artists.

A multidisciplinary theoretical and artistic project dedicated to the “Polykatoikia” (apartment building) as a powerful social, aesthetic and emotional symbol in city life of the past 100 years

The apartment building in its present-day form was the result of a 1929 law about horizontal construction, but in the postwar years it was associated with urbanization and antiparochi (valuable consideration), as well as with the development of the suburbs. Its aesthetic, architectural and sociological interpretation is contended to this day. The exhibition, lectures, guided tours and educational programs that accompanied the project enhanced drastically the public debate regarding the predominance, development and prospects of the apartment building as a phenomenon that clearly marks Greek urban space, leading to a reflective perspective for the presnt, as well as the future of Athens, and every greek city in general.

The exhibition opened in November 2022 and lasted until February of 2023 with thousands of visitors. Texts by curators Nikos Vatopoulos and Iris Kritikou can be found in this publication along with the photographs and the artworks, which were presented or granted by institutions and collectors especially for the exhibition.
