Celebrating Graphic Novels with Ikaros Publications

Workshop with Alekos Papadatos
For ages 16–21 (registration required)

How does a blank page become a story? How do sketches bring a plot to life? How do you remove the unnecessary while keeping the essence? After a brief historical/theoretical introduction, participants choose a story and work on transferring it to paper under the guidance of the instructor. At the end, all sketches are presented to the group, analyzed, and discussed. Who best “told” the story? Who captured the character, the moment, the action? The best effort (determined by a vote of the young comic artists) will be awarded a free Graphic Novel from Ikaros Publications.

Current politics, historical context, and the Graphic Novel: what is their relationship? Is the historical and political moment intertwined with art? Does art produce politics? Does it write history? How does the “sketch” converse with reality, and how can it capture an era? How are past days trapped in line and color? Can a single strip take you 100 years back?
