The Hellenic American Union’s HAU Movie Club pays tribute to Bette Davis with a special screening of Paul Henreid’s film “Dead Ringer”
In the movie, Bette Davis plays twin sisters Edith and Margaret, who do not get along. Edith owns a bar on the verge of bankruptcy, while Margaret has become wealthy. After a heated quarrel, Edith murders her sister and assumes her place in high society.
The film belongs to the grand guignol thriller genre, with Bette Davis recognized as its queen, especially after the success of the 1962 film “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?”. Dead Ringer is based on the short story “La Otra” by Ryne James and was adapted for the screen by Albert Beich and Oscar Millard. This film marks the second time Davis plays a dual role, following her 1946 performance in “A Stolen Life”.
