HAU Movie Club: Places in the Heart

Screening

Hellenic American Union Theater

As part of Black History Month, the HAU Movie Club of the Hellenic American Union proudly presents the acclaimed Oscar-winning film Places in the Heart (1984), starring Sally Field, Danny Glover, and John Malkovich.

This classic film by Robert Benton was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two: Best Actress for Sally Field — whose acceptance speech became iconic — and Best Original Screenplay for Benton himself.

Set in 1933 Texas during the Great Depression, the film follows a widowed woman (Sally Field) struggling to save her farm from foreclosure and raise her two children. Along the way, she is helped by a drifter (Danny Glover) seeking work and a blind man (John Malkovich) she takes in as a boarder — all while facing the racism and intolerance of the time.
