In 1941, the University of Michigan established the English Language Institute Testing and Certification Division (ELI), which became the first research and learning institution of its kind in the United States. In 2010, the ELI evolved into Cambridge-Michigan Language Assessment (CaMLA), following a joint venture between the University of Michigan and the University of Cambridge – institutions with a long history of research and development in the fields of language assessment, teaching, and learning.
