Hellas Alive has been designed with the needs of academic institutions in mind. For universities offering Modern Greek as part of a language, humanities, or area studies curriculum, the platform provides a rigorous, structured digital complement that extends and deepens what classroom teaching can offer.
What the Platform Offers Academic Institutions
The platform's CEFR-aligned curriculum maps naturally onto university language requirements, and its AI-driven feedback tools — particularly in speaking and writing production — support the kind of individualized formative assessment that is difficult to scale in large-group teaching contexts. Students can use the platform for independent study between seminars, for targeted skills development, or as a blended-learning component of a formally assessed course.
The platform's progress tracking and performance reporting features also provide instructors and programme coordinators with meaningful data on student engagement and development across all four language skills — supporting evidence-based teaching decisions and monitoring student progress against CEFR benchmarks.
Institutional Access
The Hellenic American Union offers institutional licensing arrangements for universities and academic departments wishing to deploy Hellas Alive across a student cohort. Institutions interested in exploring a partnership — including pilot programmes ahead of the Fall 2026 launch — are warmly invited to make contact.
Hellas Alive covers three levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) the international standard for language proficiency recognised by educational institutions, employers, and governments worldwide.
| Level | Stage | What You Will Be Able to Do |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Beginner | Introduces the Greek script, core vocabulary, and essential everyday phrases. Learners can greet, introduce themselves, and understand simple familiar expressions. |
| A2 | Elementary | Builds communicative competence for routine situations — travel, shopping, social exchanges — and the ability to form sentences with growing confidence. |
| B1 | Intermediate | Enables learners to handle most everyday situations in Greece, describe experiences and events, and express opinions on familiar topics with independence. |
Pathway to Official Certification
The Hellenic American Union is the official body responsible for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek, known as Ellinomatheia — the internationally recognized Greek language examination offered at six levels from A1 to C2. The Hellas Alive curriculum is directly aligned with the competencies assessed in these examinations, making the platform a natural and highly effective preparation pathway for learners who wish to have their Greek language proficiency officially recognised.
Learners who complete the B1 level on the platform are well-positioned to sit the corresponding Ellinomatheia examination.

Hellas Alive is built on the communicative approach to language teaching: language is acquired through meaningful use, not memorization. From the very first lesson, learners encounter Greek as it is actually spoken and written — in conversations, texts, stories, and cultural situations — and are actively supported to produce language, not merely recognize it.
All Four Skills, Together
The platform develops listening, reading, writing, and speaking as part of a fully integrated curriculum. Skills are never practiced in isolation: a listening comprehension activity leads naturally into a speaking response; a reading text becomes the basis for a writing task. This interconnected approach mirrors how language is actually used, building real fluency rather than compartmentalized knowledge.
Flexible, Self-Directed Learning
Hellas Alive fits around the learner's life, not the other way around. There are no fixed sessions, no minimum weekly commitments, and no waiting. Learners choose when to study, for how long, and what to focus on. The platform provides structure and guidance without imposing it — so whether a learner has thirty minutes a day or three hours on a weekend, the experience is equally rewarding.
Greek Culture, Built In
Language and culture are inseparable, and Hellas Alive treats them as such. Cultural content is not supplementary to the curriculum — it is woven into every level. Learners explore Greek neighborhoods, customs, conversations, and everyday life, building not just linguistic competence but genuine cultural understanding and connection.
Progress That Is Always Visible
The platform tracks performance continuously across all four skills, translating learning activity into clear, milestone-based progress reports aligned to CEFR descriptors. Learners always know exactly where they stand and what they are working towards — a level of transparency that keeps motivation sustained over the long term.
The defining feature of the new Hellas Alive is the depth and sophistication of its AI integration. Artificial intelligence is not an add-on — it is the engine that makes the platform genuinely adaptive and personal. Every learner follows a path shaped by their own performance, and every interaction is informed by an understanding of where they are and where they need to go.
| AI Capability | What It Does for the Learner |
|---|---|
| AI Conversation Partner | Simulates authentic Greek dialogue calibrated to the learner's CEFR level — available at any hour, without a tutor. |
| Adaptive Learning Paths | Continuously recalibrates content, pacing, and exercises to each learner's evolving strengths and gaps. |
| Pronunciation Feedback | Real-time analysis of spoken Greek provides targeted, specific guidance on sounds, stress, and rhythm. |
| Writing Assessment | Evaluates written production across grammar, vocabulary, and coherence, returning level-appropriate feedback instantly. |
| Smart Progress Tracking | Monitors performance across all four skills and surfaces personalized recommendations for what to practice next. |
| Personalized Review Engine | Identifies gaps and schedules spaced-repetition review to consolidate learning efficiently over time. |
Speaking Without Fear
One of the greatest barriers to language learning is the anxiety of speaking — the fear of sounding wrong, of being judged, of not being understood. Hellas Alive removes this barrier entirely. Learners can practice speaking Greek freely, at any time, without a human audience. The AI listens, analyzes, and responds — providing immediate, specific, constructive feedback on pronunciation, stress, and fluency in a private, pressure-free environment.
|
Real-Time Pronunciation Feedback When a learner speaks, the platform's speech recognition engine processes the audio instantly — evaluating individual sounds, word stress, and the natural rhythm of spoken Greek. Feedback is specific rather than generic: the system identifies precisely which sounds need attention and offers targeted guidance on how to correct them. Over time, it tracks pronunciation development, surfacing clear evidence of progress. |
Writing With Confidence
Written production is one of the most demanding aspects of language learning — requiring simultaneous command of grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and coherence. AI-powered writing assessment in Hellas Alive evaluates learner texts across all these dimensions, returning detailed feedback calibrated precisely to the learner's current CEFR level. The result is the kind of individualized written feedback that would typically require a specialist teacher — delivered instantly, at any hour.
|
AI Writing Assessment Whether a learner is composing a simple self-introduction at A1 or a structured paragraph expressing an opinion at B1, the feedback is appropriate to the task and the level. Comments address not only what is incorrect, but why — and how to improve. The cumulative effect is a learner who develops genuine writing competence, not just the ability to complete exercises. |

Platform Information
Launching Fall 2026 - CEFR Levels A1-B1
Hellas Alive is the Hellenic American Union's online platform for learning Modern Greek as a foreign language. First developed in the early 2000s as a pioneering digital initiative, the platform has been comprehensively redesigned for 2026 — integrating a new curriculum, a modern learning environment, and a powerful suite of artificial intelligence features that make it unlike any Greek language learning experience currently available.
The platform is fully self-directed: there are no class schedules, no tutors to coordinate with, and no prerequisites beyond curiosity and motivation. Hellas Alive is available to learners anywhere in the world, at any time, on desktop and mobile devices. It covers three internationally recognised CEFR levels — A1, A2, and B1 — taking learners from their very first contact with the language to genuine communicative independence.
