HAU Movie Club: A Patch of Blue

Screening

Hellenic American Union Theater

The Hellenic American Union continues its new cinematic initiative, “HAU Movie Club”, and in honor of Black History Month presents the Oscar-winning classic American film "A Patch of Blue" (1965)

One of the most significant films in American cinema, the story unfolds against the backdrop of the civil rights movement in the United States. It centers on the love between a white blind girl and a Black man. Notably, when the film was first released in theaters in the southern U.S., the scenes in which Sidney Poitier kisses Elizabeth Hartman (in her film debut) were cut, only to be restored when the film was later released on DVD.

The film received five Academy Award nominations: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score. Ultimately, Shelley Winters won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Hartman’s oppressive mother.
