Words (can) do it: Translating the Second World

At the first "Words (can) do it" meeting for 2024, we explore poetry through translation as a gift, a challenge, and a political act

This is the 15th "Words (can) do it" event of the “1 x 2” format, where a translator presents their work on foreign-language or ancient Greek poetry. In this session, we meet the poet and prose writer Gianna Boukova as a translator of Bulgarian and Russian poetry.

In his sleep he sang the perfection of his dreams
that end in pogrom. [1]

The deer intertwined their antlers as if united
by an ancient marriage of mutual attractions and mutual infidelities. [2]

Gianna Boukova is a bilingual poet, prose writer, and translator, born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She has published, in Bulgarian, three poetry collections, one short story collection, and a novel. Since 1994, she has lived in Athens and is a member of the editorial team of the poetry magazine FRMK. In Greek, she has published the poetry books O eláchistos kípos (2006), Drapetomania (2018), and S (2021). Over the past decade, in collaboration with magazines such as FRMK, The Books’ Journal, and Poietiki, she has translated and presented some of the most important texts of 20th-century Russian avant-garde poetry; emblematic voices of Bulgarian poets from the radical generation of the 1960s; and poems from the contemporary Bulgarian literary scene — always in collaboration and under the editorial guidance of poet Dimitris Allos.
