Talking about Greek ceramic art today

Talk

Hellenic American Union Rooftop

On the occasion of the exhibition CHOMA, a special roundtable discussion is being organized on the theme of the landscape of contemporary Greek ceramic art today

The roundtable will feature short presentations by ceramic artists Mirka Drapaniotou, Maro Kerasidioti, Iosifina Kosma, and Nikos Skalvenitis. This will be followed by brief additional comments and interventions from participants in the exhibition, as well as an open discussion with the audience. The session will be moderated by the exhibition curator, Iris Kritikou.

As the curator notes: “Within the exhibition CHOMA, conceived as a multifaceted, referential, experimental, and aesthetic space, contemporary clay works are presented alongside a small core of earlier signed and anonymous ceramic pieces, as well as selected paintings with either a symbolic representational core or even the literal material component of earth itself. A key connecting element among the works presented in the exhibition spaces of the Hellenic American Union is an inventive poetic sensibility that, as a fluid yet defining and compelling condition, governs and shapes them. Alongside this, there is the dominant monochromy of the flesh of clay, the emphasis on the process of form-making, and the potential for the transformation of matter through different methods and firing temperatures. The exhibition seeks to present a snapshot of the landscape of Greek ceramic art today, featuring contributions from across Greece: from Northern Greece to Crete, from the Ionian Islands to Sifnos, Serifos, and the rest of the Cyclades, from the Peloponnese to Thessaly and Epirus, and from Macedonia.”
