TOEFL iBT®

Levels:
A1-C2
Language:
English

The TOEFL iBT is a high-stakes exam specifically designed to assess and certify English language proficiency in academic and professional contexts.

It is intended for individuals seeking admission to undergraduate or postgraduate programs in Greece or abroad, as well as for those aiming to enhance their professional prospects internationally.

As of January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT is offered in an updated format, with emphasis on both optimizing assessment quality and improving the candidate experience. The Reading and Listening sections are designed to adapt in real time to multiple levels of difficulty (multistage adaptive), aligned with each test taker’s performance. In addition, by leveraging modern technologies, candidates have the option to take the test either at authorized test centers or remotely, from their own location. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) contributes to safeguarding exam integrity and effectively supporting the proctoring process. The total test duration is 1 hour and 30 minutes, and results are released within just 72 hours.

The TOEFL iBT belongs to the TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) family of assessments - the most widely recognized and accepted English language certification exams for admission to educational institutions in Greece and worldwide. The Hellenic American Union is an official TOEFL iBT test center in Athens and Thessaloniki, and offers all tests within the TOEFL® family in Greece.

As of January 21, 2026, the scoring system for the TOEFL iBT is changing. Each of the 4 sections of the test (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) is scored on a 1-6 scale, while the overall score is calculated as the average of the 4 individual section scores.

The table below illustrates the equivalence between the 1-6 band level scale and the 1-30 score scale for each section. The total score is derived from the sum of the 4 individual section scores and is then converted to the 1-6 scale.
