Thinkeroo # 1: Book Reading for Young Learners

YL1 & YL2 classrooms, Kaplanon 12

In late October, our students in the Young Learners 1 (YL1) & Young Learners 2 (YL2) weekday classes celebrated Halloween in the context of Thinkeroo – our first book reading of the school year.

YL1 students put on their wonderful Halloween costumes, formed a reading circle and read the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr & Eric Carle. They used their stick puppets to retell the story – and made sure everyone was seen! But they couldn’t get enough! The young readers were so inspired that they decided to become writers themselves. So, they created their own story books with the things they could see!

YL2 students, keeping in mind the spooky Halloween mood of the day, formed a reading cirle and read Winnie the Witch by Korky Paul & Valerie Thomas. The students followed Winnie’s efforts to change Wilbur (her black cat) and cast colourful spells on him waving her magic wand! They gasped when Wilbur turned green! They sympathized with him when he hid at the top of the tree! And they cheered with joy when Winnie decided that a black cat was exactly what she needed. At the end of the day, a colourful home may be the best thing that happened to Winnie – and Wilbur, of course! Although they did enjoy casting spells on Wilbur (and on Winnie for that matter!) and painting them in different colours, they all agreed… We should never have to change our friends!
