Hellenic American Union Theater

Tribute to African-American Heritage with a landmark film of American cinema

As part of the annual celebration of African-American Heritage (Black History Month) in the United States, the Hellenic American Union, in collaboration with Mooviereel and "Petit Plan: Cinema for Teens", presents the classic film by Daniel Petrie starring Sidney Poitier, “A Raisin in the Sun” (1961), with free admission for the public.

In 1960s Chicago, an African-American family struggles to survive in a cramped, rundown apartment. Hope comes in the form of a $10,000 insurance check, but the money is not enough to fulfill each family member’s different dreams for the future.

The film is based on the play of the same name by Lorraine Hansberry, the first African-American woman to have her work performed on Broadway. Sidney Poitier and Claudia McNeil were nominated for a Golden Globe for their performances in the film. In 2005, the film was selected by the United States National Film Registry as “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.”

The film will be introduced by Jerome Kaluta, a singer, musician, and actor born and raised in Athens, of Congolese descent. His music blends Afro-European influences with funk, soul, reggae, and disco. As an actor, he has collaborated with Giannis Kakleas, Fokas Evangelinos, Dimitra Papadopoulou, among others, and has appeared in several films and TV series. His first solo album, AFROGRECO, features 11 songs sung in 5 languages, released under his own label.
