Documentary screening and panel discussion about immigration and living in foreign land on the occasion of the re-publication of the book "A Weft of Memory" by Vasiliki and Thomas J. Scotes..

"Immigration, foreign land, memory, song" documentary screening and panel discussion at the Hellenic American Union

The story of Vasiliki Scotes is a common story of immigration. She was born in 1908 in Theodoriana of Epirus and immigrated to the United States in 1931 with her husband. Nearing 100 years old, she recalled her childhood memories and dictated to her son, Thomas J. Scotes, a linguist and retired ambassador of the United States, traditional songs, poems and proverbs, gathered in the extensive bilingual publication of "A Weft of Memory" (revised and enriched 2nd edition, 2017). In 2010, at the age of 103, Vasiliki Scotes traveled to Greece for the last time to be honored by the President of the Republic for the preservation of popular oral tradition. In the midst of crisis, she journeyed through the country with her granddaughter, Athena Scotes, meeting young people who consider emigrating as a solution to their current predicament. The result of their trip was the documentary of Athena Scotes "Last Song to Xenitia", which will be screened at the event.

After the screening of the documentary, a panel discussion will follow with: Haris Vlavianos, poet, essayist, Alexander Kitroeff, Associate Professor of History, Haverford College, Pennsylvania, USA, Vassiliki Chrysanthopoulou, Assistant Professor in Folkloristics & Society, Department of Philology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Thomas J. Scotes, retired US Ambassador and author of the book "A Weft of Memory".

The event features Vasiliki Scotes’ songs,  set to music by Lakis Chalkias.
