The Bierville elegies

Dec 4, 2019

Presentation of the poetry collection by prominent Catalan poet Carles Riba, translated into Greek by Eusebi Ayensa and Nikos Pratsinis…

"Bierville Elegies" Book presentation at the Hellenic American Union

Carles Riba (1893–1959) was a notable poet and writer. In addition to being an influential figure in Catalan letters, he was also a Hellenist. He became known for his translations of classical Greek texts as well as for the first-ever translations of C.P. Cavafy’s poems into an Iberian language—i.e. Catalan—which were subsequently set to music. Carles Riba studied at the University of Barcelona and, in 1919, he published his translations of Homer’s Odyssey. During the Second World War, his democratic convictions led him to flee to France, where Riba continued his translation work and wrote the Bierville Elegies (1943).

Speaking will be: Konstantinos Paleologos, Professor, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the book’s translators, Eusebi Ayensa και Nikos Pratsinis.
