PMP goes Online - What to expect

You can now take the PMP Certification exam online from the comfort of your home or the office, 24/7.

The online exam is exactly the same as the one administered at test centers. It is still a closed exam and as for the quality and the questions, they remain the same. The only difference is that you can take it from your home or the office through a secure platform with a live proctor.

You can take the exam any time you want. All you need is a:

  • computer with a webcam in order to be video monitored
  • fast, reliable internet connection in order to avoid disconnections that could cost you valuable time
  • clean & quiet workspace where you will not be interrupted for a few hours (nothing else should be on your desk)

In order to schedule your exam, you must submit your application payment. Once the payment is received, you will be eligible to schedule your online proctored exam. Log in to PMI.org, navigate to Review Application Status under myPMI and click Schedule Exam. Then you will be directed to schedule your online proctored exam through Pearson VUE.

Taking the PMP exam online is very similar to taking it at a test center. What changes is the online check-in process with security protocols that help verify your identity, plus you are being proctored by a remote proctor via your microphone and webcam. Since you are video monitored by a live proctor, you will need to schedule the exam ahead of time. Appointments are offered 24/7, so you should be able to find a time that is convenient for you.

Let’s have a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the online exam:

Pros

  • You can sit the exam from the comfort of your home/office.
  • There is no need to go through security and metal detectors that only increase anxiety, so it is a more friendly process for those who get nervous in maximum security settings.
  • No one disturbs you, since there no other candidates around.
  • Great option for those who want to use this time and proceed with the exam.
  • You can get certified now and as soon as the quarantine is over you will be ready to interview for project management positions.

Cons

  • You won’t have the two pieces of scrap paper given during the exam at test centers. This is to make sure that no one is cheating, since proctors can’t see what you’re writing on paper to tell whether you’re cheating or not.
  • There is only one 10-minute break after the first two hours. The break is in the middle and you cannot review or modify the first 100 questions after the break. This is also to make sure that no one is cheating by looking at notes in another room during the break.

Online check-in process

Before starting the exam, you will need to complete a self-check-in process. You will be prompted to take a headshot photo, a picture of your identification card/driver’s license, and pictures of your surroundings. Once you begin the exam, you will not be permitted to leave the room or move out of the proctor’s view unless it is during the new built-in 10-minute break. Once your 10-minute break is over, your proctor will check you back in and you will finish the second and final part of your exam. If you do not return to the room at the conclusion of your 10-minute break, your exam session will be terminated.

Starting the exam

To start your exam, login to PMI.org account and click on the Certifications tab in the purple banner. Click on Apply Now. This will bring you to the Certification Program Overview page. Here, you will click Begin Exam. The Begin exam link will be available 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time.

Make sure you have your acceptable identification available so that your identity can be verified. Acceptable forms of identification include: Driver’s license, military ID, national identification card, passport, and alien registration card (green card, permanent resident, and visa). The form must collectively contain both a photo and signature of the test candidate. Only original documents are accepted, no photocopies.

The check-in process takes approximately 15 minutes for candidates who have previously completed a systems test.

10-minute built-in break

The exam is divided in two parts. You have to answer the first 100 questions in the first two hours. Once this part is over, you can have a 10-minute break to use the bathroom or have a snack. The break is optional and is not included in the time you are given for the exam, so technically you have 4 hrs and 10 min in total. The break is in the middle and you cannot review or modify the first 100 questions after the break.

Built-in calculator and whiteboard features

You are not allowed to use exam-specific materials and are not permitted to use scrap paper, erasable whiteboards, a calculator, or any other physical writing object such as a pen, marker, or pencil. Instead, the exam has built-in calculator and whiteboard features. You can access it by clicking on calculator icon in the exam screen. You will also be able to access a built-in whiteboard while taking your online proctored exam. This feature gives candidates the choice to work through items visually by entering notes or drawing shapes. You can access it anytime during the exam by clicking the eraser icon at the top of the screen. You can learn more about this feature here . Please note that during the online exam, you can access both the built-in whiteboard and calculator at the same time to perform notes and calculations.

If you have a question during the exam, you can use the Chat function at the top of the screen to contact the proctor.
