Special Leadership Skills for Project Managers

Enhance your project team leadership skills 

The seminar is targeted at new and experienced project managers who need effective, but simple techniques for leading project staff, resolving conflict and negotiating. It is particularly aimed at those participants who have previously taken the Art of Project Management® as it expands on the materials associated with that course. It is fast-moving, focused, includes several workshops and provides participants the opportunity to develop their project leadership capability.

Introduction to leadership

  • Traits, styles, situations, functions
  • Team building
  • Team decision making, consensus and problem solving
  • Team cognitive styles leading to enhanced or reduced team performance
  • The basics of communications and how to effectively conduct meetings
  • What motivates different people and how to motivate as project manager

Situational leadership

  • Dimensions of leadership styles and effective leadership styles
  • Participating vs task-orientated styles leadership and where combinations of these styles are most effective 

Participation: Participants identify their individual style and modify it oon the basis of a particular situation demands

Workshop: In groups, participants use their new skills to evaluate project situations and determine the most appropriate leadership style; they compare and discuss their assessments with those of experts

Negotiating and conflict management

  • Key stages of negotiation
  • Negotiation process 
  • Dealing with “wild ducks” and difficult people
  • How to avoid conflict
  • Six steps to managing conflict
  • The emotional side of conflict and how to deal with it

Workshop: In groups, participants will address hypothetical leadership situations
