Battle of Ideas 2012
Two debates in English on education and economy, as part of the international series of panel discussions entitled "Battle of Ideas"…

The Battle of Ideas is an annual initiative which started from the Institute of Ideas and was organized and supported by collaborators and sponsors all over the world promoting in this way free thinking and vivid exchange of ideas. In this context, the following two panel discussions are taking place at the Hellenic American Union:
Is anti-austerity pro-growth?
Currently, the two most controversial words today are 'austerity' and 'growth'. The Battle of Ideas poses the question whether anti-austerity promotes growth. In France, Prime Minister Hollande announced that “austerity is not inevitable”. In Greece, the coalition of the three major parties won the elections by promising to renegotiate the austerity package. Invited speakers talk, agree and disagree against the backdrop of financial crisis.
Speakers: Professor Leonidas Vatikiotis (Journalist, foreign affairs and international economy, lectures, political economy, Varna Free University of Cyprus), Paschos Mandravelis (Columnist, Kathimerini, former editor-in-chief, Newsweek (Greek edition), Gregory Farmakis (Entrepreneur, CEO Agilis S.A.), Rob Lyons (Deputy editor, spiked, writer)
Chair: Geoff Kidder (Director, Membership and Events, Institute of Ideas, convenor, IoI Book Club).
What’s the Academy worth today?
University education in the 21st century in a great number of countries is subject to an increasingly large number of challenges. The contemporary pressures on the university seem to express a view of it as a means to an end: a demand that a university be for something. Should we consider first just what a university is?
Speakers: Professor Thanos Veremis (Emeritus Professor, political history, University of Athens, founding member, Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy- ELIAMEP), Vasso Kindi (Associate Professor of Philosophy, University of Athens), Nick Sotirakopoulos (PhD Student, University of Kent, Canterbury), Angus Kennedy (Head of external relations, Institute of Ideas, Chair, IOI Economy Forum, Convenor, The Academy)
Chair: Ashley Frawley (Researcher, University of Kent, Canterbury)
