Hellenic Traditional Costumes – Headdresses
Exhibition featuring Greek traditional headdresses in the context of “Athens – World Book Capital 2018”…

Actively participating in the notable cultural celebration “Athens – World Book Capital 2018” and, more specifically, in its section titled “Open Collections,” the Hellenic American Union is making available to the public part of its collection of traditional costume drawings by Gisis Papageorgiou, selecting those that best reflect the particular aesthetics of traditional Hellenic head covers.
Originally mere functional components of women’s attire, headdresses evolved to signifying women’s ancestry, social status and marital status, featuring fascinating variations from one place to the next in style and decorative elements. The exhibition at hand is more than just a presentation of elaborate drawings of representative traditional headdresses; it constitutes an invaluable record and documentation of elements of Hellenic folklore. The featured Headdresses are drawings by Gisis Papageorgiou and part of Hellenic American Union’s collection tallying approximately 1,400 drawings of Hellenic traditional costumes, including more than 300 drawings of headdresses. All drawings that make up the collection are the product of extensive research performed by the Hellenic American Union in cooperation with Gisis Papageorgiou over the past ten years. Part of this remarkable compilation has already been published in 7 volumes on Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Epirus, Cyprus, Crete and Peloponnese, under the scientific overview of the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens. Still, this research project is a work in progress, aiming to eventually include drawings of the traditional costumes from all historical Hellenic territories.
